Looking into a new motor that will handle racing...
 

hey guys... I did a little racing at a couple events at my local track (2 hours away) last year and did pretty good, considering. (revo 3.3 BL) I am the only brushless MT there, at least last year I was, this year maybe someone got a e-revo BL, who knows...

But I have been practicing some racing maneuvers around my yard, yada, yada, and after doing some very hard running with a 7s1p A123 pack, the motor is quite hot now that it's summer temps. It seems like the motor is running hotter than it used to, or maybe i'm just getting harder on the throttle? I've run the 1512 for 2 years now with great bashing success (whatever that means), but when you push it, it warms up. Great power however.

Setup:

-1512 3D 1700kv.
-7s1p A123.... Although, will be running new Hyperion G3 35C 6s 4200mah pack from now on.
-Quark 125B (hasn't died on me yet, third times a charm)
-15/51 gearing on gmaxx single speed gearbox

I don't have the temps because I lost my temp gun, but the motor gets hot enough that I can only hold it for about 6 seconds maybe? That's running it very hard without flipping the thing backwards. I would guess at up to 165F at least.

So, I am stuck with three decent motor choices:

-HPI Flux Tork 2200Kv (based off Neu? or Tekin?))
-CC 2200kv Neu
-and last and maybe a better choice the Tekin Truggy 2000kv. motor

I'd like to hear your opinions and/or experience on these motors.

Hmm, 7s a123 will spin a casle neu pretty fast, you will need to gear down some to run similar speeds to what you have now. It will also make more torque and possibly work your batteries harder. The flux motor is identical to the castle neu internally. No experience with the tekin, but the magnets tend to come off the early production motors so make sure yours is a later model (I think they have fixed this by now so not a big deal)

I think a Neu 1515/2D would be nice as well.

1515/2D, 2600kv? That's mucho too fast, are you joking? :wink:

Linc, yeah, I know 2200Kv. is kinda fast still for a good solid race setup... I can gear down, but still, I'd rather be down more between 1700 - 2000kv. Too bad CC didn't have a few other Kv. choices such as 1500kv. and a 1800kv. models.

Do you still have that 1521/1Y Linc? Interested in selling sometime by any chance?

Does anyone have any Tekin Truggy motor eagletree's or videos?

Does your 1512 have old bearings in it? Could it be that sloppy bearings are causing excess heat?

I think it's one of the original motors yah... but the bearings seem to be in like new condition.

Well then, have you put any thought into a Medusa?

The tork is based off the castle, id look into a 1515 1.5y

medusa is also a good choice.


And you might have been under a rock- but the neu motors have had 3 or 4 new revisions since the original, bigger bearings etc. it might be worth sendin the motor in for upgrades and try that first.

I would recomend either a Tenno neu 1515 2.5D or a Medusa 36-70-1600. But honestly 165 after some hard running still isn't that bad, esspecially if running through grass.

1515 2D is 2050kv (good 5s motor), you must be thinking of the 1512.
For 6s racing I think between 1500 and 1700kv is good. I like my 1515 2.5d on 6s, but it mostly got raced on 5s.
I'd get a temp gauge and find out what your temp is. If you can hold it for 6 seconds it might not be too bad. If you can only hold it for 2 or 3 then I'd say it's too hot. When it's around 200f it's usually instant ouch. A $30 gauge is worth it though, when talking about $200 motors.

Oh yes, my mistake, the 2D is 2050Kv... you're right nitrostarter. That would be a good option, but the Neu neu's are twice as much as the CC, and the Tekin motors. I only wish.

I like the looks of the Tekin motor the most, and they also have to most choices for Kv.. they also have the most beefy looking case, and they have the solder leads, which is a huge + IMO.

The tekno Neu's... are they pretty much same quality as CC Neu's?

So, if price is no object, which motor would you guys prefer, and why:

Tekin Truggy motors OR Tekno Neu's? (Why can I not find them anymore?)

If money isn't an object get a genuine Neu! The Tekno Neus are the same but a sealed can, the newer Neus have bigger bearings just like the Tekno editions. Unfortunately it appears that the Tekno Neus are being phased out, Impakt still has a few though. The CC neus are a step below these, but still great quality, however a 2200kv motor may be hard to gear for useable speeds on anything over 4s. Tekin motors have had some issues but they are standing behind there product and taking care of their customers. Medusa also makes a great motor with lots of kv choices and a good price. For a little more than a feigao you get a motor that is near the quality of the Neus.

Of these I would rank the Genuine Neus and Tekno edition Neus at the top. The Tekin, CC/Neus I would rank about the same, although the Tekins haven't been out very long to prove themselves. The Medusas are right behind these IMO, maybe even tied or ahead, they are very close.
