I use 60/40 Rosin Core from RadioShack.

Yep, that's what I use too...

E-Revonut 06.24.2009 01:00 AM

me 3, but not from radio shack

Ditto on the 60/40. I got mine form the hardware store. Make sure you get electrical solder, not plumbing. I also picked up some silver bearing solder, but I have not tried it yet. Supposedly it melts at higher temperatures and cools of nice and shiny. Neither seem to be necessary fro what I am doing...

lol, yeah. Plumbing solder is usually acid core. Not good at all for electronics work!

so any 60/40 is good with rosin core. what is the main difference between 60/40 and 70/30 i know its tin to lead ratio so more tin is stronger, but melts at a higher temp?.

so basically 60/40 is 60/40 no matter what brand, or are their quality differences.

The 60/40 is fine for 90% of general electronics jobs (r/c included). I have some of the silver bearing solder as well. It does have a higher melting point and so you might need a higher wattage soldering iron/gun. The advantage to the SBS is that it has less resistance than the standard 60/40 and it makes a much stronger joint when it cools- both due to the silver content.

so sbs is harder to use but better results?

Yes. It's also more expensive. Again, due to the silver.
