Hyper ST Pro Brushless project?

Hi, my name is Bryce, i live in Australia and im new here.

I have owned a few RC's and i currently own a Traxxas Rustler with Velineon motor and Mamba Max ESC. I have decided that i want to move up to something bigger, better and more fun. I have decided to go with the Hyper St Pro which i will covert to brushless using the RCM motor mount. I will be using my Mamba Max ESC with a Medusa 36-70-2000 Motor with bec on 4s Zippy lipo for the time being until i can afford a MMM.

Is there anything you would change and where are the cheapest places to buy these items?

Cheers
Bryce

Welcome aboard! Mike carries most everything you need for a good Brushless conversion, I just wish he could get some cheaper lipos in stock (the ones he has are good, but many people are on a budget that doesn't allow super-expensive lipos).

With the Mamba Max and that big Medusa I'd watch ESC temps and perhaps add a fan. I'd probably start off with a 14T pinion and adjust gearing from there based on temps and performance.

Mike is currently working on a new heatsink/clamp specifically for the Medusa motors to block off the cooling holes (keep dirt out of the motor) and be sized properly for the new 70 and 80mm motors. If you don't want to wait until they come out you could cover up the holes with some electrical tape and get a "XL" sized heatsink clamp (74mm) with one of his 4mm spacer plates at the front. The clamp is a very good investment because the endbells on the Medusa motors are glued in place and came come loose while bashing causing serious damage to your motor, they also reduce the temperature by up to 40 degrees (I'd expect at least a 20 degree drop) which makes the motor run cooler and thus more efficiently.

Yes a fan is a must have. What Bec would you recommend?

Here is what i have come up with:

Hyper ST Pro Kit: $300.00 from Amain Hobbies
Motor mount: $45.00 from Rc-Monster
Medusa 36-70-2000 Motor: $123.00 from Rc-Monster
4S 5000mah Zippy Lipo: $63.00 from Hobby City
Radio System(Or a Spektrum radio system off ebay): $180.00 from Amain Hobbies
Pinions(what size and pitch): $?? From ??
Novak Fan: $15.00 from Amain Hobbies
CC Bec: $22.00 from Amain Hobbies
Mamba Max Esc: Already own

Please edit that list with what would work better and advice is welcomed :)

Thanks

For pinion try 14t and its mod1. RC-Monster and Robinson Racing pinions are probably best.

For the medusa I would also recommend the RCM heatsink to ensure end bell stays on.

Got a link for those couple of parts?

Cheers

Thanks of that :)

I have just been thinking, how much smaller is the Hyper 8.5 compared to the ST Pro and the the ST Pro that much better than the 8.5?

Get the ST pro. It's a beast.
On mine I run a medusa 70-1600, MMM and 6S. The ST pro is not a light truck- so consider going with at least a 5S or 6S setup with a MMM and medusa 70mm. For now though- your setup sounds ok, but I'd use a 70-2300 instead. Also add an ext. cap to your MM. For a 2300, use a 12t pinion, for a 2000, use a 14t pinion.

Actually, I would sell the MM and give up on the Novak fan and CC BEC, use the money and get a MMM. Much better suited for a Truggy. And you could give up on the Medusa and get a CC/Neu for the same price. I've seen the MMM 2200 combos go for the $225 brand new price range on ebay. This will give you a great, powerful setup.

Also, the Hyper 8.5 is a buggy, where as the Hyper ST is a truggy. Make your decisions according to which you would like. Both are robust bashing warriors.

Thanks for the advice guys, i will keep it in mind.

I have just found someone who is selling their Hyper ST for $250 all bits are pro parts apart from centre spider diff and CVD's.

BL_RV0 06.29.2009 07:11 PM

IMO buy one new.

Finnster 06.29.2009 09:10 PM

I would 2nd just going for a MMM. By the time you buy a fan and bec and all that other stuff you end up at about the same price but a less capable unit.

A combo would be great if you can find it, tho I prefer to use higher voltage to keep the temps down. I can get my 1700kv 2.5D on 5S upto 160 after enough hard running, and a 4S/2200kv unit will heat up even faster.

Lastly, I would stick to RCM pinions. I run 16/48.

The HST is a great truck either way, turns awesome and is very affordable.
