Hot lipos

Hey everyone. I just finished building my erevo and it is insane. I'm running a NEU 1515 1.5d with quark 125 and maxamps 5000 hv packs. The motor is 125-135F along with the speed control. Batteries are 135F after a 5-7 minute run. I had one pack puff and fail on me during the test run. It was 185F when i pulled it out. I had checked the temps on everything less than a minute before with everything in the 130-135F range. So I assumed it was a bad pack. I don't like the batteries this hot. I tried to find the gearing and temp calculator I saw posted here quite awhile back but am unable. Does anyone know where I can find it or able to post a new one.

You will notice very quickly that maxamps are not popular here. Whether you had a bad connection or it was the battery itself, it's time for you to check out a different brand of battery, imo. And depending on how much you wanna spend, you can have a pair of 3s packs for little to nothing from hobbycity. Or you can buy something from the RC-Monster store, many great batteries to chose from. I run the 5s2p c-tech packs I bought here from the RCM store and love them.

I purchased the packs about 1-2 years ago when they were still popular around here and affordable. Believe it or not. I've had no problems with them until this point but i was running them in much smaller trucks with smaller setups. My primary concern is about the temps.

Get some nice polyquests, hyperions or TrueRc batteries. I run the TrueRc batteries in My e-revo with a CC neu (2200kv), and they never get over 110f. Whats your gearing? You might need to gear down a little....

I would get some Hyperion G3 packs, from what I've heard they are the best battery out now. I have some Rhino packs and I'm lucky if I ever get them over 100*F in my RC18T.

yeah, Maxamps are crap. Look at hobbycity at the turnigys and flightmaxes, then look at neu, hyperion, flightpower, and polyquest. They all make packs that work great. Maxmaps take cells that are sub par for true rc, and tells you they are the best ever, then sells them for an outrageous price. They don't match their cells either which is one reason so many puff and go out of blance...

I say send the pack in, have it replaced, then sell it and get some nice packs.

Being 1-2 years old doesnt help either, especially as the older maxamps lipos are particulaly... not good.

Yes, I agree, they are simply crap batteries.

If you want a good value battery go for some Turnigy, or Zippy flightmax packs from Hobbycity.... or if you want the best performance for twice as much then go for the Hyperion G3 packs, they really deliver the punch, and they have the best prices for the high end pack brands... neu, flightpower, polyquest....

Mike carries the Hyperion G3 packs. They are 35C/65C rated... and underrated IMO.

Those 500 cells are only good for about 80 amps, you need at least 150 amp capable batts to run the 1.5d. I had the same setup, and ran 6000 25c polyquest lipos in 4s to power it. The 1.5d can make power, but you have to feed it!

I would recommend the following as well.

Turnigy 4s1p 5000mAh 25c (these are matched cells)
Rhino 4s1p 5000mAh 25c
Zippy 4s1p 5000mAh 25c

All around $60 each and these cells hold close to 6000mAh HIGHLY recommend these cells. I run all of them.

Fantom, SMC and Thunder Power have some nice 40C packs. The Fantom 40C 5000's are becoming popular locally. Not the cheapest packs around though, but you get what you pay for...except maybe with some of the maxamps stuff.

zeropointbug 07.13.2009 12:07 PM

Maxamps is the exception for everything...

Snipin_Willy 07.13.2009 12:49 PM

We all know where this discussion might go.

I for one am going to try the Turnigy 5.0 cells in my rc8 project. Looking to order a couple in the next week or two if they still have them in stock.
