Best place to take temperature readings?

Got my MMM v3 back in action today, and wondering where the best place to take temperature readings on the ESC and Motor are?

I have a Raytek Laser temp gun and I get readings of:

60C (140F) on the wire end of the motor
45C (113F) on the pinion end.
ESC seems pretty consistent @ 37C (99F) all over.

my main reason for asking is the ESC. I found at times when I pulled the car up to temp it, the ESC fan was running, but when I temp'ed the ESC I got temps of less than 40???? This happened about 3 times>????

It's really difficult to take readings of the esc since it is encased in plastic. However if the fan is on, chances are that it is only slightly above 150 as the fan is pretty good at keeping temps from rising much higher. The best place to temp the motor is the sticker on the endbell or the very end of the can. In general it is best to stay away from anything shiny when taking infrared readings.

I question the ESC is getting to 150 as when I laser temp'ed the HeatSink inside the plastic case in multiple places I got a max of low 40's F?? The highest temp I could get on the ESC is where the motor wire plug in. That was about mid 40'sF

It is possible the heatsink is alot cooler than the area where the thermal probe is on the underside of the heatsink, but then again 40 - 140 is a bit more than a slight difference.. Meh, I wouldnt worry too much- try checking the bullet plugs (motor and batt) on the esc to see what temp they read.

Well 40C = 104F and where the MMM reads the temperature is right underneath the heatsink which is pretty far in there and obviously the hottest.

Sorry guys, I keep stuffing up the temps and not converting them to Farenheit.

so what temps do you guys normally register from your MMM ESC's?

I think mine was around the 100-110*F mark last trip out; God willing the sunny weather we had today will hang around for a few weeks so I can get some more runtime, hate British weather..
