Got Jiggy with Mamba Max

I've decided I got tired of the same 'ol look of the Mamba Max and did something about it. Took out the wires and soldered plugs instead. Power wires were upgraded from 13AWG to 12AWG. Motor wires were left stock and got 3.5mm plugs on the ESC side. This time I can mess around with different motor wire lengths in all my cars without being stuck with wires that were cut too short. I used Lutach's 25V capacitor bank for that extra touch of gangster.

Is that blue PCB in the 4th pic a custom capacitor bank you made?

No, that's Luciano's cap bank that I got from the ESC's that he sold.

Way cool man. JW: What would you charge to do this?

snellemin 08.05.2009 02:18 PM

I don't have any cap banks, so I would have to use a single/pair caps and a tvs.

Hello!

Snellemin
What Soldering iron did you use to do that (or technique)? I've been using a 60W one and can't get it right! I've already damaged a led because of the heat. It just doesn't melt the whole solder...

Cheers!

It's not just about the wattage, it's about the tip used and the condition of the tip. A 60W iron with a large chisel tip works very well. I would guess you are using a tip that is too small and it heats everything up, but not quite enough to melt the solder on the areas where there is a lot of PCB trace acting as a heat sink. And/or, your solder tip is heavily oxidized. Cleaning with a damp sponge and maybe some extra flux paste is necessary.

I use a 40W Weller(SP40L) with a fat tip. To get the solder out of the wire holes, I just stick a screwdriver through once the solder softens up. All the extra solder just ends up on the screwdriver, which just falls off.

Yeah, its not that big of a tip... will try to get a larger one. But I was impressed how the ESC took the iron "beating" I gave her:oh: only one damaged led

thanks for the help

Yeah, I used to use a 40 watt Weller...then I tried a Hakko...WOW...now I can solder A123 cells end to end.

So I guess you just had to have your wires coming out the bottom too? BTW that's some nice stain on that monster desk you got there. Maybe that's why my back is so out of wack! Doctor says I need a Backiotmy!
