End Bell Cover for Neu?
 

I could have swore that RCM sold a Front Motor Cover for BL motors, but I did a search on their site, and couldn't find one.

I was wondering what the general consensus was on these for motors like Neu or Medusa?

I dont run one myself (has got a Medusa), but I can see their worth when running a truck on a very dusty/sandy/gravelly track or bash site. For normal park use (grass), you could live without one probably. They do give you more material to thread the mounting scress into though, avoiding accidental damage to the windings.

Oh, I saw that thing. I was looking for something that didn't have holes, or had some kind of micro-mesh to keep dirt out completely, but allow for breathing. I didn't realize that item was the one some use.

I don't quite get it though.... RC Trucks... dirt.... grass.... dust... and getting dirt in the motor is obviously not a good thing. It's almost like a major design flaw if you ask me. If BL motors can fry if they get dirty... than why bother?? This hobby is based off dust and dirt!

That being said... only "Dust" is the real problem mostly. The body generally keep dirt out pretty well. But I was hitting some dirt mounds the other day with my 3.3 Revo, and dirt was everywhere. All over the filter, the shocks, chassis, etc. So, had I ran my brushless trucks that day, would it have been a catastrophic run? What about dudes in Iraq or near the beach? Are they just not supposed to run BL motors?


Am I missing something?

Also, I'm assuming that for anything that's NOT a Medusa, you'd want the 4mm one. The Medusa one is specific to ONLY Medusa motors?

And my Heli Neu that I'm going to run in my trucks, I'm not sure you can put a cover on that, cuz it would block the fan right?

Well, remember that the Neu and medusa are airplane/ heli motors, so they need the big holes in the endbells for cooling- not much dirt or dust a few hundred feet in the air afterall :lol:

Most ground based BL motors have sealed endbells pretty much, such as feigao, hacker, lehner, novak etc, so dirt and dust can only really hurt the bearings at most, and those are easy enough to clean/service replace if needed (generally just means popping open the motor and poppin out the bearings to swap them over).

People have been using the air motors in ground vehicles though for years, very rarely has dirt or dust been much of an issue, just the occasional grindy bearing from fine dust- its more the small pebbles and chippings getting stuck between the pinion & spur that causes issues, and even thats a rare occurance.

I wouldnt use a cover on a heli motor though no, kinda defeats the object of having a fan to push/pull air through the motor.

I cover has 8 holes- the 4 countersunk ones are for you to screw it to the motor, then the other 4 holes that aretn counter sunk are for mounting the motor to the tranny/ center diff etc (you only use two holes ofcourse, leaving 2 spare like you would have normaly).

If you dont fancy the mount, then some adhesive foil tape works just fine, resistant to high temps and can be cut to match the shape of the motors endbell (round).

Hmmm... foil tape. That sounds like a good idea. Yeah, I guess if most BL motors are sealed, then sealing the endbell isn't a bad thing.

You know, you'd think that since Neu motors are considered some of the best, and now widely used in MT's, that they would offer a sealed endbell for purchase, or make cans specific for MT use. Maybe they do?

They offer both sealed and not and finned and not finned.
Tekno has their own sealed version as well.
