A MMM in Savage Flux question for Castle or the gurus
 

Hey guys, I'm heading out with some of the guys for a Savage bash next week, and usually we end up mudding this time of yr. I'm wanting to protect my MMM (Flux Motiv) speedy if I can.

Would one of these be safe to use around it?

I am running the Stock 20/44 gearing with 2 * 2s2p 4600mah A123 packs (30/60C rated so 138 Amps constant rated) geared for 34mph (54kph)

Both A123 packs have had the stock 14 guage wire removed and replaced with 10 guage wire and genuine deans plugs.

We typically give the trucks a blow down with the compressor after each run.

Well, since we can't stop you from running through the mud, that's probably going to be the best choice. The MMM has a conformal coating which should allow it to be slightly water proof in case any drips get through.

I'm sure you are aware that those will seriously impede the airflow to the MMM - one of Freezebites first posts was a link to a guy that was all upset 'cause he burnt up his MMM in the Flux. Well, come to find out he was running one of those socks on it. Just know your risk.....

the last MMM i saw with a sock over it like that was on fire...that's just my opinion.
yes they have a dust/splash proof coating but i wouldn't trust it too much, i'd try mounting the MMM up high and/or make a guard around it like a tub with an open lid, then it gets plenty of ventilation since heat rises.

I think mounting location is key here like shaun said. Then use something to protect around the sides while leaving the top open for airflow.

That sock is asking for a meltdown, as others have said.

I say go for it. Those filters are supposed to still allow lots of air thru. I run something like that on my quad with a k&N and it works great. I know several people have posted meltdowns, but I just dont see how a pre-filter could have that much to do with it.

Hmmmm, I'm thinking we start building plexiglass enclosures to encase the MMM that are see thru and that channel the air so we can start doing more stuff like this. Maybe one of us needs to design a truly weatherproof truck that can go anywhere without any limitations.

Those filters are made for carburated engines that suck air in, not ESC's that rely in airflow over the heatsink to remain cool. It's completely different dynamics and physics involved. They simply do not allow for enough airflow to pass the required air over the heatsink to keep it adequately cool. The little fan on MMM does not have enough power to pull the necessary air through that prefilter.

I was looking through some old posts a few weeks ago and remember seeing a guy who put a Mamba Max (removed out of the case) in a sealed box immersed in mineral oil for his Summit so he could drive it in the snow. The oil helped dissipate heat, but I'm not sure how well it worked in the long run. Seems like a mess to me. I'll try and find the thread when I get home.

I would put the holes around the sides though, low down; if you leave the top open but sides and bottom sealed, it will likely fill with water sprayed up by the tires as it goes through puddles.

Lots of small holes wont let in much water so long as its not submerged, though a fully selad box would be better for a fully submerged esc- stick a small cool pack in there and the esc fan will still have cool air to cirulate...
