1/18th Sidewidner Question

My son just bought me a mini E Revo brushless, this lil truck is awesome. We got to wondering if the Micro Sidewinder we have sitting here can handle the VXL motor of the mini E Revo?

Metallover 08.14.2009 11:22 AM

It would probably have some trouble. The mini e-revo is a heavy truck for that esc and the esc is designed to run tiny 20mm motors. It will run it, maybe run it long term if you get an external bec, but I would go for a 1/10th sidewinder/mamba max for the mini e-revo. Skip the mamba micro pro too; that may run hot with a motor as big as it is in the mini e-revo.

People have smoked the micro pro esc with these minis. Peak draws during acceleration can reach up to 55 amps.

Thanks for the replies guys, I had a feeling this would be the answer just looking at the physical size of the motor in this thing.

Wow... I figured the Micro Pro would be rated equal to if not higher than the Mini-VXL setup in the new Traxxas Minis. What is the Mini VXL rated for in those vehicles?

I'm guessing they're rated for 40a+ continuous. I wouldn't be surprised to hear 50-60a.

simplechamp 08.14.2009 03:47 PM

What's the Micro Pro rated at then?

V0RT3X 08.14.2009 03:54 PM

Some say 50A.

Metallover 08.14.2009 04:28 PM

I think the micro pro is rated for 35a, but that might be pushing it. It's the same as the sidewinder, but with a case and a heatsink.

Sammus 08.15.2009 08:46 AM

none of them are 'rated' for anything due to castle refusing to follow dodgy non standard rating systems. I reckon the people smoking the mamba micro pro in the mini e revo are the traxxas forum types that dont seem to have a clue about anything. I ran my electric rustler on a mamba micro pro on 4s a123 when my mamba max was down and it loved it no worries, got a bit warm but nothing to worry about, id be surprised if it died in a mini e revo unless you had it geared to do 100mph with 1/10 stampede wheels on it or something.

^^^What he said^^^

The mamba micros are stout little ESC's. I would imagine the scenario would have to be pretty stupid to give one a melt down.

Unsullied_Spy 08.15.2009 09:38 AM

The Micro Pro should be just fine, don't do anything stupid as far as gearing or voltage and it'll handle it fine. Everyone seems to be obsessed with running those things on 4s, personally I think they have all the power you can use on 2s and stock gearing. If you want a little headroom go with the 1/10th Sidewinder but the Micro Pro is a good, solid ESC.

Dadx2mj 08.15.2009 05:17 PM

I am more than content with it on 2s and would not consider going over 3s with it and even that is doubtful for the area I run it in. Bone stock out of the box it did 42mph on my Bushnell radar gun with a Reedy 2s 20c pack. I just thought it would be cool to be able to tune it with Castle Link

Yeah let's all bash on the Traxxas forum. No doubt that forum has MORE than it's share of clueless people but there are a few who have working brain cells. I would like to think I am one of the later.

ksb51rl 08.15.2009 10:58 PM

Thanks for posting that, Dad.

I understand that the attitude of some here is that "I don't need the Traxxas forums anymore since I know how to set gear mesh." That's pretty close to a direct quote. Fact is, SOMEBODY has to tell all the noobs how to do just that. Dad and I and many other people give a lot of our time to try to help them out. Sometimes our efforts are even rewarded.

After all, if NOBODY gave good advice regarding upgrade paths from RTR motor systems to systems like these great Mamba and Sidewinder ones and others, then you'd be paying a whole lot more for them since R&D costs wouldn't be spread out over so many units. Instead of owning all that condescension and arrogance, try saying "thank you" to those who do what you are unwilling to do.

I have been running a Sidewinder 4600 combo on 3s and its more than enough power infact its too much. But overpowering a model leads to lower running temps but also can shredd a drivetrain.I highly suggest a center Diff to even out the power.
