HV-Maxx or something else?
I have almost a stock e-maxx i was going to get the HV-Maxx but found this forum. I would like to get run times to what i have now which is 11mins off 14 cell GP 3300.
Since i have 6 seven cell packs already i will be using 14 cells so what motor would be best? I did a search and it looks like most use the warrior 9920 for a esc. I need more speed and power to beat my friends HV-Maxx. I'm likely to add even more cells later on after i get used to the power. :027: I have a bunch of pinions already so i would like to get a motor with the same size shaft as the stock one if possible. The pinions came with the emaxx i bought it off ebay and it already had cvds installed and differant diffs. How do you know what motors have the most power and speed by looking at the specs? The more RPM's you get the better for speed? Can someone explain what each BL spec really means. |
well welcome to the forums! what i would recommend is if you plan on adding more cells later on i would go with a wanderer xl motor. they disapate more heat, run cooler, have more torque, and better runtimes. the key to select on is figure out if you want more speed, runtime, ect. what i would recommend is a 8xl or possible a 9xl. the advantage with a motor that has a lower kv (less rpms) is that it can be geared higher for more speed and still have oodles of torque. basically, a motor turning more rpms isnt gonna have as good of an efficiency which results in less runtime, and it wont have as much torque. so an xl with a 9920 is the way to go. if your look for about 40 mph on 14 cells and would like to be able to increase voltage later on, i would recommend the 9xl. if you want a little more speed the 8xl might be for you. of coarse, speed depends on gear which would vary upon which motor you choose but, with an xl you have more than 1 or 2 to choose from. you will have room to play with gearing and not worry about the motor getting to hot thus you can gear according to if your doing speed runs or it you are just bashing and want more runtimes than speed. the 9xl on 12 cells will give you about 25 minutes of runtime as well on 18 geared appropriately.

A 9XL on 12 cells will be very slow. I would agree with squee, an 8XL and 9920 are definately the way to go for 14cells (and should be good for 18cells). The 8XL has a 5mm shaft - but new pinions wont cost much, and if you get the gearing right first time you should only need 1-2 pinions. Hopefully someone with this set-up will reccomend you a good gearing

Thanks for the info guys. Like i said i never use 12 cells all i have is 7 cell packs so whatever motor i get will be on 14 cells for now and maybe later i will add more cells.
I found out that the max i have has UE 6 diffs installed! I don't race on no track or anything all i really do is speed runs, i have a really big yard! I would like to drag race my friends HV-Maxx and blow him away. Speed wise i'd like to get as fast as it will go. I don't think 40mph is fast anough don't the HV-maxx go close to that? |
One essential thing to remember is your motor can only put out as much power as your batts can give it. An 8XL on 14cells will do the best part of 45mph, and will embarrase (sp) the HV maxx in terms of acceleration. An 8XL on 18cells will do 50mph without too much difficulty.
Coolhand has used 2 HV-maxxes in a truck, but says a 9XL on the same cell count blows them away. Believe me, your friend will be blown away! |

Well the wanderer xl motor has a 5 mm shaft. To me they are worth getting new pinions over. You may want to consider a strobe to for new pinions. I have ran the 9xl and 7xl. 12 cells on a 9xl get you about 15 min. I have got 34 min on 20 cells on the same motor. 14 cells on a 8xl should put you about the right run time 10- 15 min depends on driving style. It would be faster than the hv as well. Pick you up some 18 51 gearing 8xl and a 9920 with a strobe slipper system. Your friend will follow you in the choice.

I'm currently running an 8XL with a 9920 in an 11 pound truck with 14/51 gearing, a strobe slipper and 5s lipos. I have not even attempted to up the gearing yet but I will once I can drive it at this speed which I would put at about 40mph. I previously ran an HV-Maxx system and like others have said there is no comparison. In addition to everything else the system just runs cooler and I get 20+ minutes of run time. Like others told me when I was asking these questions, you won't be disappointed with the huge upgrade in performance.

To my calculations you hitting about 36 on stock diffs and 31 on ue diffs. with the 14 51 gearing and 5 s lipo with a 150 mm tire.
