Looking for "safe", long-running Lipos for my set-up

(For those who read my other post, I've decided to keep my converted Revo as the official E-Revo is forcing my price too low! :-) )

I'm looking for good Lipos for my set-up: converted 3.3 Revo using MMM v1 and 9XL motor and a 20t spur.

I'm not looking for top performance as I'm usually bashing by myself and never race. Instead I'm looking for batteries that I'll be able to bash hard without fear of them puffing/dying on me.

Should I look for the highest C rating? Are there some brands better suited for general bashing then others? Would 6S be better (I was going with 4S before they puffed)?

Mike is having a great sale on Polyquest li-po's at the moment. Are you running a single battery or dual?

If you are running a single or dual set up, ...the PQ or the Hyperion G3 line is excellent. Your 9xl is not the best quality motor so you will have to pay close attention to temps.

Hard to believe that you still have a v1 mmm esc. You can send it in for a free upgrade if you wish.

If you are running a single batt set up, go w/ a 30c rated battery..such as the ones I mentioned above. If you go w/a dual set up, you can go for a lower c rated battery...20c seeing as you are pulling from 2 batts. instead of one.

Actually, I would spend the money on the ccneu 2200kv motor and a battery...even if it means only getting 1 batt. The ccneu motor on 5s would do well in your Revo and run cool and it is a much, much, much better motor than the 9xl you have.

When I bought it, my choice was pretty much a 9XL or pay 3-4 times the price for a Neu. Have things changed since then?

Did not know that. Are the newer versions a lot better? Haven't had a single problem with mine yet. (Only about 25 bashing sessions though.)

So with costs aside, I'd be better off with 2 30C batteries?

I think the answer may depend on your reason for wanting a battery that may or many not puff...

Is it fear of replacement cost? Is it fear of fire/damage to other parts of your rig?

If its the previous - get yourself some zippy's (or whatever the current label on them is), and run them till the die/explode/fade away/whatever, then buy another set.
If its the latter, then you'd be better off with PQ's, Mikes packs, Neu's, etc. From what I've been able to read (or absorb from reading....:oh:), you will better protect your ESC with a higher C rating, if that rating is in fact believable.

Yes, there are much better motors now....Tekin, ccneu for example. Both are v/reasonably priced.

You can send in your v1 mmm for an upgrade to a v3 anytime you wish. the newest v3's are great. Pretty much fixed all the bugs in the v1 & v2.

You will be pushing around a heavy truck so...I would opt for the 30-35c . batts. As I mentioned above, Mike is selling top notch batts. in his store.

Cool. 200$ for that 2200kv seems very nice if it's a good motor.

Since I'll probably have to pay the shipping costs, I'll wait until it burns! :-D

New questions: what would be the best combo (as cash "is" an issue):

Two Turnigy 3S 5000, 30C with a ccneu 2200kv motor

Or

One very good 5S battery from Mike with my current 9XL.

Also, I know that volts = power, mAh = runtime. Does the C rating affect either power or runtime?

As I said my goal is not to have the fastest truck possible; rather I'd like to have the most reliable truck. I just want to be able to go out with fully charged batteries, bash until the LV cut-off engages and go back home without having to worry about the packs.

Not to pull $ out from under Mike but I'd consider 2-3000mah or 2-4000mah
5s packs and Castle 2200 ?

mah. affects run time, the higher the mah, the longer the runtimes. However, the higher you go, the more they weigh. ... the higher the C rating, the better the batts. hold their load under stress and better they are put together

If it was me...I would opt for the 2 batts and the ccneu motor. The turnigy;s have been doing well as far as people not complaining about them.

And you can get a Tekin motor or a ccneu for under 175-

Why not two 5000mAh?

And a nice 5S pack with the ccneu motor would be too expensive for me...

Well add tx and shipping (and probably duties since I'm in Canada) and you quickly get to 200$... :-)

Well, I was suggesting the smaller Mah packs because they are cheaper and still don't know if your have a single or dual battery setup ?
2-5s 3000mah would be 6000mah wired is paraellel.You should yeild a 30-40 minute runtime
The 5000mah in twins would weigh a ton.

First, I did not notice you were form Canada so you are correct on the $200-.

If you are running 2 batts. in parallel, you could get, as mentioned above, 2 5s 3000 mah for a 5s 6k set up. One advantage is that the lower mah. batts. are cheaper than say a 5k batt.

Well, sure the 3000mAh are cheaper, but you have to buy 2!

Current prices:

Two 5S 3000mAh 30C Zippy = 100$
One 5S 5000mAh 30C Zippy = 80$

Sure you gain 1000mAh, but it's also 20$ more expensive. I don't think you save money by buying 2 smaller packs.

On the other hand, is it easier on the batteries if I use 2 packs instead of a big one?

It was mentioned/asked several times weither or not you were running 1 or 2 packs at a time. Now we know, you plan on running a only 1 pack format.
If you want to save money on batterys it's NOT going to get cheaper than Hobbycity,Just buy a Castle NEU and get one of the most Important ingrediants you need for your Revo regardless. Then your battery decision will boil down to what kind of weight you want to deal with to keep your truck reasonably balanced, IE L to R and F to B.

Much as I love the zippis for being cheap, part of me is cautious as they are still budget packs. What I do currently is use a pair of 5s 25c 4000mah lipos in parallel, that cost me $200 total, but it does give me extended run times, 8000mah on tap, and cooler running temps.

In your situation, I think its well worth spending just a little bit more money and getting a pair of 3000-4000mah packs in the 25-30c range vs one big 5s 5000mah lipo. If it means having ot save up a little longer, then thats what I would do to get a more reliable battery setup...

Nope: I don't care if I use 1 or 2, I just want what's best for my set-up in general bashing conditions.

Well that kind of decision is not really important for me. All I want is to have fun with my truck.

What types of packs do you recommend? And do you think that changing the motor is the more important thing?
