I'd replace the bearings and if you didn't replace the ring gear it should be replaced too since it is likely worn and will quickly wear a new pinion.
|
If new bearings don't help, carefully check the bulkhead for cracks. Under high force, a cracked bulkhead could allow the pinion to mis-mesh. I've beat the crap out of my XT8 and haven't had any diff issues yet.
Also, exactly how are you shimming? The pinion and/or the diff itself may need to be shimmed. |
the shims between the ring gear and the bearing.
is there any other diff than xrays that will fit? |
Judging by the type of wear you are getting on the pinion, it looks like it is a little too far off the ring gear and only the tops of the teeth are making contact. So shim the diff itself (via the outdrives) so the ring sits a little closer to the pinion (put some shims on the ring gear side of the diff). The pinion itself looks like it is in the right place because almost the whole tooth is worn evenly.
And, did you check for cracks in the bulkhead? They may only be visible when you twist them one way or another if they are hairline. Not sure if any other diffs will work, but no matter what diff you use, you're gonna get the same results unless they are shimmed right. I would solve (or at least discover) the underlying problem first before you spend money needlessly. Just my $0.02. |
ok so take it apart clean it and check it for cracks
|
I honestly think the issue is with one or a combination of the following (in order of what I think is most likely):
- improper shimming - worn bearing(s) - cracked bulkhead |
