Which system? I'm confused

Hi,
I have brushless XRAY XT8 that ran great for 3 month with EZRUN 80A and 2350KV EZRUN motor. (I can post a video)
I ran it with 4S 20c zippys. Performances were great with no issues at all.
I was very happy with this setup until on the last weekend my ESC went on fire and almost melted completely.
I don't know what was the root cause for that, could be a short, moister or internal failure.
Now I'm looking for new ESC but while looking around the threads I noticed that all brands have reliability issues.

I don’t mind to invest extra $$$ for MMM or TEKIN but if at the end its going to end up with a lot of smoke I prefer to stay with the cheap EZRUN.
I leave out of the U.S and its very difficult to me to utilize the warranty that the above brands have.
What do you think? Should I return to EZRUN or put my money on a new system?

Thats a tough call, with very valid points about warrenty & price vs reliablilty.

In theory, the ezrun escs or similar type escs should run fine, but many of them are just 1/10 escs with a few tweaks- the ezrun 80amp esc that looks like the 150amp model would probably be the one I'd go for if I had to.

One question though, do you use motor brakes & reverse, or mechanical brakes?

I would run mech brakes and disable the esc's brakes and reverse, that should take the strain off the esc.

I agree w/Neil on that in your situation, the 150 amp esc should do fine.

Thanks, I will go to the EZRUN route again.
I really I liked the performance of it up to the point in burnt.
I'm using my ESC to break.

By the way here is my Truggy with the EZRUN before it burnt out:

Go with two tekins ;)) one for time other is in repair ;)

Hi again,
I just burnt my 2nd EZRUN ESC. See the picture, I almost lost my Truggy, I was lucky to end the flames on time.
Looking for a new ESC. which one is better for 4S power? mamba monster or TEKIN RX 8?
I'm going to buy only the ESC and not the entire combo.

Get a Tekin RX8 or MMM, you are much better off spending a little extra cash for a higher quality product... yeah sure all products are not bulletproof. But, from what I have seen the EZRUN, I have seen almost as much failures from them than Tekin or Castle, and alot less people use EZRUN escs, so what does that tell you?

I have a Quark that is over 2 years old now and is still running fabulously, albeit with some mods, but still.

I assume that's the 80A version that burnt? If so, I would think about stepping up to the 150A version, especially in a truggy. To push a truggy well, 4s requires quite a bit of current. 80A might be enough when running 6s on a matching motor kv, but the 80A is only rated for 4s. Remember, despite the physical size, the 80A is basically a MM capability-wise.

If that was the 150A version, I would look at adding extra caps/TVS modules in case it was some braking spike that overvolted the FETs or to help reduce ripple currents.

go for the MMM as far as reialbilty goes...

jas21373 10.10.2009 09:33 AM

hi mate ,I run a mamba max with an external bec on my hyper st pro ,never had any issues with it ,I mainly run 4s 5000mah ,but for a long time was running 5s 5000mah .

Are you changing the punch or timing settings on the hw? That is pretty much proven to send it to a fiery death. That 150 should have been fine.

Benji 10.10.2009 07:38 PM

The punch was at 4.
I'm going to buy the MMM V3. I hope this unit will serve me better.

By the way, MMM with EZRUN 2350KV motor will run fine with 4S 5000mAh 20c? my gearing is low at 11/46.

suicideneil 10.11.2009 10:24 AM

That setup shoud be fine- batts could do with being 25c, but with your low gearing I dont expect it to be much of a strain for them- just keep a check on temps.
