Drilling stock gears

Hey, has anyone tried drilling a stock traxxas pinion gear out to 5mm???

Dafni 02.21.2006 02:09 PM

Haven't actually tried, but I got the suspicion they might be hardened.

I had some Kyosho pinions on a lathe, and my drill bit didn't like them, to say the least.
We live and learn, they say.

The problem with that is that when you drill the hole to 5mm - there is not enough "meat" where you screw the set screw down to the shaft - It will strip - there is only like one or two threads - It will not work - been there tried that - there are some websites that sell 5mm pinions - they are drilled - and dont work either. I wont mention the site though...:005: :005: :005:

It can be done, best way is to get it done with a lathe. with a drill, it is pretty hard to get the hole in the center. like Hotncold says, the meat for the setscrew will suffer badly. (when you have got a lathe, you could make an extra steel ring, that goes around it )

It don't work very well at all. I have tried this and threw some of the pinions away. You can drill the hole off a touch and have a wobbly pinion to.

that's the reason you should do it with a lathe Leroy!

I don't have a lathe but I know someone that does. Yes Dafni I do believe they are hardened. And you are right Hotcold there won't be much left for a set screw but Serm has a good idea about the ring. I think I will see if my friend will try it and if it's not to much trouble I will have him do a few extra. Thanks guys for the input. :027: Ain't it amazing how some people can agree with everyone :005:

well i tried it the other day and it didnt work at all. i think you would be better off just getting some from mike. the slighted bit and it will wobble very badly.

I've got some modded 1/8" to 5mm pinions that have little steel rings around them, used them with my old dewalt 820. The pinions didn't look pretty, but they did they're job very well

I agree with ya squee - Thats one part that you dont want to fail -

Its not hard to do with the right cutter. I used a 5mm counterbore bit with 1/8 pilot. Did it right in the drill press, the pilot keeps everything centered. Then I just used 680 loctite to keep the pinion on the motor shaft. Only bad thing was the cutter cost $15 and broke after 3 pinions.

HotnCold 02.21.2006 08:13 PM

Yea - why would you wanna just buy a 5mm pinion and be done with it - Drill press, collars, counterbore bit, and replacing cutter bit, and the time to do it, - sounds like a lotta work for a couple clicks on the mouse, 12 dollars, and new pinions a couple days. But thats just me....:dft008:
