Fantom Ion 17.5 Turn Brushless on 4s Lipo
Well after asking if ppl thought I could run my Fantom 17.5 on 4s I thought I'll give it a go, I think the resounding opinion in the chatbox was I'd kill the motor quickly.
Geared it 22/86 http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_2610.jpg All Set up to go http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_2611.jpg Temp Sensor on motor. Gave it 3-4 minutes before I hit a kerb (damnit!) 4s + 17.5 = Fkn FAST! Amp draw was fine: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...Slash175-2.jpg Temps were surprising, motor was hottest when I was carrying the car outside by the back. Temps do move markedly due to airflow speed as well. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...Slash175-1.jpg So yes I'd say 17.5 on 4s is fine. |
Did you experience much cogging with that setup? IMO the 17.5 on 4s is great! Just make sure the timing is set low enough... my 17.5 wasn't too fond of 10 deg.
|
No cogging at all if I ran it on smart sense mode, if I ran it on sensorless there was noticable cogging on take off.
And yes the motor is happiest on zero timing. |
I have mine geared a bit higher, and even on Smart Sense it would cog in the mid-range pretty badly if given enough throttle quick enough. Maybe it's because it has switched over to sensorless at that point and there's not enough back-EMF with the load?
In sensored only mode there is no cogging at all but the motor ran hotter... gotta love dynamic timing. |
How do you like those Goosebumps? I'm thinking about getting some for my SC10 and Slash...

What temps are you seeing on the motor? |

On Goosebumps, almost back flipped They hookup well :) |
Running 4s 3400mah, geared 26/88 in a Blitz (tranny ratio of 2.6:1). That's pretty much HPI's recommended gearing for a 17.5 on 2s  The motor hit probably 160-170 the last time I ran it (in sensored mode with 2deg. of timing "boost"). Previously in Smart Sense mode it reached around 140-150, but of course had that cogging issue. These temps are determined by the touch of my hand, which has become pretty accurate over the years.

Ok so you're using a FDR of 8.8 (approx)
Most of the local "gurus" race with a FDR of 6.5 in a Slash on 2s with the 17.5 motors. Is yours the Trinity / Fantom motor or a different brand? My experience from my TC days are that the Trinity based motors seem to run cooler than the LRP's and early Novaks |
It's a Novak, the yellow band version. Pretty sure it's this one:

Nice, that'd be extremely quick on 4s then I'd gather.
What sort of run times are you seeing these temps after? |
That last run was probably 10-15mins, the previous run (Smart Sense) was closer to 10mins.
