Different Savages
So I really like the look of the TCS 1/5 savage...
But i know nothing about savages - What's the difference between the Flux savage and say an XL except for the motor mount? Is it just the transmission i.e. bulks, diffs, outdrives etc are all the same? I know the flux uses the clamping style motor mount - Anyone have any idea how hard it would be to mount something else like a CC 1520... Thanks |
The XL and Flux both share the heavier duty drivetrain. The XL has extended drive axles.
The XL comes with a 3spd tranny, the Flux has a single speed. (The Flux is based off the 2spd, with a locked idler gear, #100905. The 3spd is very different than the Flux SS. It requires many gears to be changed to lock.) XL has the 8 std shock setup, Flux has 4 BB shocks. Supposedly the flux has a different bulkhead part #. Flux has a 44T steel, spur XL is 52 The Flux motor mount requires space outside (a cutout) the TVPs to fit. The XL does not have this. XL tvps are obviously longer. Any 15 series will work in the motor, but will need to be a smooth can. The finned versions will interefere. May be a work around for this, but I haven't seen it. Both versions will need the upgraded bulletproof diffs to be reliable. Otherwise they share all the same parts. Overall, its far easier to start with the Flux to do the conversion than the XL. If you found a cheap enough XL it may be worth it, and swap the trannies around, but from new the flux is the way to go. |
The fluxs' bulkheads are a bit different because they are some sort of composite.

Flux motor plate will not fit on the xl tvps, both have HD driveline. xl is about 3inches longer. xl has 8 shocks vs 4... Ill let you know how my FluxL runs tommorow.

Does the XL flux look funny with stock wheels? And I think that the wheel cutouts on the XL body aren't so good, still looks a bit short, atleast that's what I managed to see from pics. :/

the only thing you really gain with the xl is the wide axles. (they are widened outside the bearing carrier, arm length is the same, poor design IMO, I prefer flm wide arms)
the flux has the correct tranny, the xl doesn't xl won't have motor mounts the 8 shocks of the xl might handle the weight better than the 4 of the flux IMO the flux would be an easier starting point, but then again, I'd build it ground up with flm combo bulks, hpi bulletproof diffs(which you'll want and come with neith the flux or xl) flm arms blah blah blah but that's just me! |

Its worth it to buy a flux tranny on ebay, or a Sav X 2spd plus the idler I mentioned. (I did the later to save some cash at the time.) Other wise you just need a motor mount. Again, the TCS would be made for the Flux's. There are ways to make an L mount fit inside the TVPs, but its hard to adj the motor screws as its so close to the trans. You can keep the shocks and anything else. Upgrade the shocks as you wish. Not req tho. The TCS chassis can mount batts inside the TVPs, else you need flux batt trays & mounts. You can get a flux esc mount, or come up w/ something clever yourself. Either way, upgrade the diffs to the BPs. That's all you need to do really. |

Another idea is to just buy the pieces you need off ebay. All you need is arms and bulks and pins and axles. You can find shock towers in combos w/ the bulks for example, and I've bought spare pins for $1.
Also, the oem upper amrs are not adj. You can get the adj arms cheap on ebay. I'd have to add it all up, but might be easiest just buying the parts you need rather than a used kit or a new kit w/ lots of stuff you won't need (body, tvps, motor, tires etc. ) IDK Edit: Let me clarify that a bit. You will just need the F and R assemblies. Other than the trans and motor mount, most of the rest of the truck isn't used. Even in that, there is stuff you will want to upgrade. The rear uses a turnbuckle set up that stinks, so you will want the Integy rear c-hub. I also don't like the oem turnbuckles, they are soft and stretch out easy, so I would redo those w/ ballends from a good truggy, and buckles in the needed length. The stock radio box is hideous on the TSC IMO, so I would get the FLM servo tray and some radio box. Nitro savage fuel mid-tank mods use all sorts of diff radio boxes in the mod. I used an box from a ofna violator (ebay) in my truck. Tall, but nice roomy and sealed box. Hell, I have the stock radio box from mine as well as some knuckles I don't need if you want them. |
