In Need of a Good Bike
So since last summer I decided that I loved riding bikes. I always had this bike and it's been nothing but problems. I've had to replace a lot of parts on it so far and I'm sick of putting money into. I'll admit I'm a heavy rider (270 came down from 315) and I want something that can support my weight without breaking the bank. My usual route consists of me riding from home to central park, around central park, and back home. About 11 miles(google mapped it for the first time ... boy that's a lot) It's current condition is a flat rear tire(due to a bald tire)(my legs are brushless )
But anyway does anyone have any suggestions I'd like to stay on the bike so I can be a skinny bigboi146 :) |
theres a bike shop on 2nd ave say 68th street or what ever scores strip club was on. Just past the queens burough (sp?) bridge. Just up the street on 2nd ave. Its small but packed with good stuff and not too expensive for Manhattan. Thats where I bought my Iron Horse in 1999 and its still trucking. Iron horse, reinforced rear tire and a big ass gel seat for city cruising.

I've been using the same old Trek mountain bike that I got back around 1995 era. I use tires that are less knobby (more like on-road) and it supports my weight fine (which is a bit less than yours now, but I started out about the same weight). My rear sprocket set tends to skip under power when in certain gears, so I just keep it in 15th gear all the time; makes for a good leg workout on hills.

Jay Jay I went there with a friend a couple months back it the prices are higher now and the guy in the store didn't seem to happy to answer my questions. I'm going to look into a trek maybe I can find a good one for around 300.

My advice would be to get yourself educated at some bike shops on other brands also, and watch your Craigslist for a good used one. You can get a lot more bike for the dollar that way.

Do not get a full suspension for commuting. It will bob when standing or pedaling under pressure (except the Maestro linkage from Giant), and will tire you out faster. I have 6 bikes: 4 mountain, 2 commuting), so I can for sure help you pick a decent one. $300 doesn't get you a lot these days. I would get a nice STEEL hardtail with a rigid fork. They are strong and steel is soft to absorb road vibrations. Salsa makes a nice geared commuter bike right now called the cassarol I believe. I believe it's around $800 last I checked (which is the new cheap for "quality bikes". I am sure someone in NYC is selling a cheap steel commuter... haha.
Think of a bike like an RC. There are the radio shack's and Target rc's, and then there are the Mugens, Losis, xrays, etc... Especially if you are putting 12+ miles a day on it. Get a good bike. |
The older Specialized Epic's with the Fox Brain shock setup on the rear doesnt bob either... I am a 250+ rider and didnt experience any when I used to ride one... Put many a road mile on that one...

Whoops, you need a BIKE, I thought you needed a DIKE.... Disregard this ... |
