Looking for a good snow rig?? Going to Utah for a Vacation

So I am heading to Utah for another snowy vacation and looking to either prep one of my rigs for snow or buy something fun. Last time I went I used a mini crawler from Losi and it was fun b/c it did not sink...just hummed across the stacked snow. I dunno how the snow will be this time, last time it was warm enough to make the top shell a little sturdy.

I have a Lst Build going, a Flux rtr ready...just needs waterproofing, or also have a Blitz with a MM pro in her. I dont want to snow proof them all so I would like to focus on something as the trip is coming up quick...like next Monday. I could go buy another mini crawler and paint the Bronko body that I have. I dunno.

I am open to any suggestions for the perfect snow rig I can get locally as well. I think crawlers are fun in the snow.

Meanwhile watching you-tube vids to get ideas.

I ran my XT8 truggy the other day and it was fun. The snow was completely packed under the shell and everything ran fine (oddly enough). Batteries didn't last long because it was so cold and I had to pretty much maintain WOT to keep moving, but the rooster tails were fun. And drifting on the ice/packed snow was fun as well.

Oh ya really....I have my XT8 Just needs a ESC, sent mine to Castle today as a matter a fact. I just didnt think such a heavy rig would bode well. May just have to give the flux a shot at it.

I don't know where in Utah you are visiting, but right now in Sandy (Salt Lake City suburb), it is real light powder falling right now, and tomorrow is supposed to be more of that. If there is really light powder on the ground, nothing RC stays on top of it, everything just sinks.

If it doesn't snow anymore until you are here, it should crust over pretty well, which means almost anything will stay on top of the snow, well enough. I would recommend 4wd and big tires for flotation though. HPI Bajas with paddles also do pretty well in snow too.

Ya I have family in South Jordan so your right down the street. I think I will just bring the Flux and see what happens. I guess I need to look into the whole waterproofing bit. I am trying to watch squirrels vids on You Tube but they are so friggin painful to listen to.

Could see if some ski's from ffrc for the savage would fit on the flux. Add some paddles from pimp and go to town

4 paddles work way better than rear paddles and skis. Losi "420" paddles are super cheap on ebay and fit any 40 series rim. Word.

pimp paddles are only 14mm hex and 3.2" tires, okay if you don't mind switching hexes

Cool, PM me if you want some directions on some decent places to play, or even meet up if I am available (now is a bad time of year for me). If you break anything stop by West Valley Hobbies in Taylorsville, they should have anything you need (Shameless plug, I work there part-time).

To be honest, I don't worry too much about waterproofing my rigs in snow, receivers are usually in a radio box, that will protect them somewhat, high-end servos are usually sealed pretty well, and ESCs need airflow. I run an BL e-revo and the body is pretty tight fitting so that helps protect things, though I have friends that run fluxes and they also don't take any extra precautions.

Thanks guys, I am going to get some 420s paddles for my beadlocks. I am also going to get a new micro crawler for indoor fun. May build a cool course or something.

Ya billy I have been to West Valley Hobbies, last time I was there. Pretty cool place.

Hey sorry for my lack of MT knowledge but will these bolt up to 40 series wheels??

I know I can get them way cheaper on ebay but I am worried that HopMeUp cant deliver fast enough.

jholthus 12.30.2009 02:40 AM

Those are standard MT size tires like the ones pimp has. you could get those and a set of standard mt size wheels with 17mm hex

Zombie Maxes do pretty well-- if you can't float on the snow you can cut it up at least!

From the 19th, we have lots more snow now *sigh*

Nice Vid Red. I ordered my HobbyKing Lipos on December 24th and after not recieving thier delivery confirmation like normal I emailed them on status. I paid an absurd amount forr shipping like normal but a little more just so I could have the 5day shipment and have in plenty of time for this trip.

I got an email back today stating that the there is an server error in transfer of info between the PP and them and If I could send a copy of the payment ID from PP they would process the order and NOT until then. Really bummed that I am not going to have my rig (flux) ready to bash in the snow.

My back up is taking the esc outta the Flux and temp putting in my XT8 with badlands....or maybe the savaga flux Terra tires I have....hmm that might work actually. I need another ESC lol
