Mamba Max Pro backorder?
Seems no retailer has the Mamba Max Pro in stock (RC Monster.com, Towerhobbies.com, etc.).
Does anyone know what is the hold-up and when will there be a big replenishment? I will probably purchase a MMP + 4600kV combo, but heard that Castle Creations might release a new lower kV motor (about 3500kV). Thanks. |
As much as I hate to suggest it, ebay might be your best bet right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/Castle-Creations...item4cecc69d41
It would be nice if CC released lower kv motors; ~3500kv for 3s and 4s, ~2200 for 4s and 5s, and a ~1800kv for 5s and 6s. Otherwise, you really can't take advantage of the 6s capability of the ESC. The 4600 on even 4s is almost 70k rpm. |

Would this cause the MMPro to fail (burnt smell)? I sent mine back last week: MMPro gave up the smoke after about ten passes on the drag strip. Servo used was a Traxxas 2055 (which might not have been the problem).
|
Depends on where the burnt part was. Chances are the BEC will simply stop working or send full battery voltage if it goes out. If the BEC still worked, it was probably the FETs.
|
Couldn't say. I believe the BEC was fine as the car steered OK. Like you say, should be the FETs. This is the first ESC that fritzed on me in more than a year. Good run there.
|
You probably just pushed it too far current-wise being in a drag car and all.
|
May be... But check this the set up: 2S TP 40C 5000, LRP X11 3.5T, 46oz total car wt, 1" wide x 2.5" OD tires, overall gearing 4.3:1, zero timing, low start power. My Mamba Maxes deal with that just fine and takes the load of 2" wide tires in stride as well. Thought the MMPro could handle this setup with ease going by what the MM can do. Thoughts?
|
I really don't know. Maybe there is a weak spot on the ESC. When I was beta testing, I noticed that the MMPro heated up less than the MM for the same setup (without the fan). I know the MMPro uses newer/better FETs, just fewer of them (15 IIRC). Since there are fewer FETs, maybe you just had too much current localized in one spot and it went into thermal runaway? Whatever the case, I'd be interested to know what CC finds to be the cause. Could just be a firmware glitch that hasn't been caught yet.
|
Maybe. We'll see. I talked to Jenny and she said that turn around was going to be 2 - 3 wks. I'll talk to Bernie or Thomas next week and see what they're able to find out.
I was hoping that I would be a part of beta testing but no such luck. Pretty sure I could have put it through hell a few times. |
Short supply of MMPros is down to a lack of the new Fets CC are using- not officially released yet or something like that, so there isnt a steady supply to build the escs with.

Thanks Patrick. This is excellent news. Please let me know if you/your techs find out about why my Pro failed.

Talked to Bernie today and looks like mine will be replaced prior to diagnosis (new measure to streamline warranty/repair process) so I will have no idea what caused the MMPro failure. He did speculate that the motor was the sticking point in this instance and I tend to agree. Looks like somehow there may have been a HUGE amp spike caused by the 3.5T on the last run. Said that sensorless motors will not have this problem so looks like that's the way I'll go. Still want to give one more sensored motor a shot (Speed Passion 4.5T: much lower Kv than LRP 3.5T).
