Making a LST2 into a Truggy
 

I have to wait till Feb to start my 1/5 Savy build so In the mean time heres whats happening on my work bench.

A couple buddys of mine recently have purchased truggys, one has a Associsted RC8T and the other has a Losi 8ightT 2.0 RTR. I really like the losi, the 454 mill is POTENT and the truggy has incredible steering and durability but enough of that. They are after me to get a truggy and I don't wish to go outside my 10RC limit so I've decided to make one of my LST2's into a NitroTugggy killer ?

The truck as is now has a 3mm full Carbon fiber chassis kit so It's considerably lighter than stock, roughly 10-12oz of shedded weight. I will be using a Losi Smart Diff with Plastic 45T spur in the center diff assembly. I'm re-using my RCM 3.3 Revo Motor mount and my newly aquired 1518 1Y from Castle and will be running on 5s 3300mah 40C Zippys. I really wanted mechanical brakes but the chassis will be stuffed as is now and this Fat Bastard would rather have Reverse anyway. Climbing down from the drivers stand to get the Truggy(any RC) out of a jam that a 1second reverse manuver can rememdy sucks when your chubby or skinny.

I have to cut a new center skid plate because the motor and CD will be mounted low as possible and slightly off center, the center shafts will run level as they exit the diffs. The battery will be mounted on the upper chassis plate just off the side of center, hopeing with the weight being low and pretty much centered the handleing should be excellent ?

I have ordered all the parts nessasary to "Muggify" the dampening department and even found Aluminum Muggy shock bodies. I wanted the plastic bodies but the aluminum ones were only 11.49 a pair, couldn't resist and they'll last much longer. I also ordered a set of mounted VTR Calibers in M3 and a 17mm hub set(ghetto cheap at 12.00 for comlete set) and a Losi Truggy bodie to screw w/people.

Once I get the center skid cut and get the CD mounted up and make the center drive shafts I'll post some pictures.

Any questions or input I'm open to advice and suggestions.

Sounds like a cool project..I almost bought a hoped up LST2 for just bashing..

I just didn't feel the need to spend another $ 500+ to get it rolling while my other rc's are collecting dust.

Did you run your gearing through the speed calculator? I fear a 45t spur will be too small and you may be geared for the moon. I'm going to use a 52t in my LST center diff truck.

Muggy shocks are no different from aftershock shocks save for different length shock shafts.

Extra weight of the al ones is not worth it, IMO. Unless you plan to bash the pee out of the truck...

It's funny you mention the shocks Linc, I was thinking earlier today (after I ordered everything,DOH) that this build's theme is keeping it light weight. I'm reassesing my decision and I'm gravitateing towards Losi 8ight Shocks. I need some measurements befor I decide which. I'm gonna get the Muggy Towers on and go from there.

Another sound reason why I'm doing this, starting this build on a paid for foundation and the investment will be well within reason compared to starting from scratch. I only had to order the shocks,which I may not now use and tires,body and a few incidentals. Everything needed I had stashed in the "Treasure Drawer".

If you do need lower gearing, just swap in the Muggy diffs.

If you get an lst1 axle shaft and use as a centre shaft, it will push the motor foward a tad more. I did this and went to the LHS to get a short one to fit the other end. As a reference, the lst1 axle shaft is the same length as the lst2 but doesn't have a large cv knuckle.

Some people just don't like to use that small of pinions, I also don't know your tire size.

When I mocked mine up the CD fit with one LST center shaft and one LST XXL center shaft. Easy Peasy. (the XXL shaft is .5" longer)

The small pinion size doesn't bother me, don't quit understand why is does to some guys as you mention ?
FYI, not sure of tire radius either, using the VTX Prolines with the 4" rims and super low profile tire. I guessed with the calc at 5" with .25 balloning so if they are shorter or taller I should be OK either way ?

The CD is going to be really forward so I'll have to cut and reweld center shafts me thinks. No problem w/that, have welder here at home and the only bitch is making them spin true. I've done it countless times prior, just need patience. I do have a bunch of left over CVD's and axles from many other prodjects so I might get lucky with one but I doubt I'll score both ?

I have 4 of these packs and wanted to keep it light as possible so I'll be using one at a time. I should get decent run time, 10-12 minutes ???

that thing even though itll be light for an lst2 its still heavy and the 5s 3300 pack i think would be cutting it close.... i run a 5s 3300 pack in my 7 pound 808 buggy and i only get 12 minutes running on our outdoor track... i have a 5s 4200 for my truggies and i feel alot better about it than i would running a 3300 in a truggy, because i would be guess about 8-10 minute runtimes for me with 3300 and i only get 12-15 with my 4200.


and btw your tire height is way off, they are a solid 5.6 inches tall and they DO ballon a little bit so figure in .1 for ballon and your figures will be more accurate.

I would stick with muggy shocks, plastic body threaded, for your build. No reason to use a smaller shock. The best part about an lst based truck is the big ole shocks, they just smooth everything out. And nothing lst based will be light, but it will be planted and possible faster around a track.
