My 360 gave me the 3rrod!!!
 

My 360 gave me a scare, a few min ago.

It glitched, distorted the y axis of the pic and froze, While plying the original splinter cell double agent. (I was viewing the map at the time)

I was kinda surprised, But I thought the disk had a scratch on it....nope perfect, but I cleaned it off any way..But that's getting ahead of my self.


1. First thing I did after it froze was turn it off using the button on the console(the controller stopped responding)

2. After it completely powered down I pressed the eject button the clean the disk(see above) It successfully powered on to the dash board with no problems, and booted the game up when I put it back in with no problems.

3. Next I turned off again and this time with the disk still in I turn it on via power button. The 360 powered on....But no picture, and after a minute I got the 3rrod (my controller had all the lights lit too)

4. I freaked and powered it off immediately. Then tried step two again, It worked perfectly.

5. I forget what it did in here in step 5 but I did some thing with poweron/off

6. Next I killed power to the whole tv system (nothing was turned on) and with the power off I tried to turn them on to make sure their was no juice flowing any were.

7. Then I tried step 3 again and it started up and worked flawlessly from what I can tell, I didn't actually play any thing on it.


So that leave me here, coming to you guys my RCM homies for advice.

*Should I crack the case and tighten down those heat sinks to prevent any problems?
*Or should I just leave well enough alone?

Hey lincpimp....When I bought it off of you, you said it was like new right? And I have only played maybe 20 or so times, and never for more than an hour before turning it off. It's in a well ventilated area standing up (the most ventilated position) When done playing (most always under an hour) I check it's temps and it's always been rock steady, and not burning up.

That's all I can think of at the moment, what do you guys think? And please, no "you should've gotten a ps3" shit.

I've had a piece of shit1 before.....The lens kept on failing all the time.

Now my brother, he bought a ps2 and that worked pretty well. But he sold it and bought a Xbox, then and then only was the world was set to righteous harmony.....:yes:

ive fixed a number of 360s with this problem and my advice to you would be keep playing it till it dies on you again and once it stops working infinitely then crack the case open. If you have any type of warranty or if the sticker seal has not been broken contact microsoft to see about a replacement.
If no such luck there then you can attempt a xclamp mod. youtube it to find info if you dont know anything about it.

There are a number of people on the forum who can fix it including myself, but its not hard and only costs like 10 bucks to get all the materials from home depot and radio shack.

to sum it up.. continue playing the 360 untill this happens again. DO NOT do the towel mod.. that will destroy the 360s components.

Ive fixed 360s before and they work for a week a month 6 months and some havent broken down yet. I wish i knew a PERMANENT fix but i personally do not think there is one with the old school chips. Now they have the falcon chips (think its call falcon?) and supposedly they dont have the RROD problem.

I bought myself an elite with that chip and so far I havent had any problems..

did you have one of the first gen monsters, or one of the newer smaller ones??

Mine did the same thing...selling it for parts now and I snagged up a brand new one for $85 with ventilation mods and the x clamp mods already done

i have the halo 3 edition and that was the first one they used the falcon chip in and mine got the red ring of death last year while playing cod4.

I have felt your pain(s?)...

I bought a used HDMI console on eBay for $65 that had the mods done already. It worked for a while, then RRoD'd on me. I fixed it. It worked for another while, then RRoD'd again. I fixed it, again. Guess what? The damn thing froze up on me the other day. I haven't even turned it on to see if it's the RRoD. I'm just going to buy a brand new console with a warranty. I need more controllers anyways... :grrrrrr:

This is how, I see it.

The 3rrod is a cooling issue(for the most part) And this console was never allowed to or played long enough at any given time to over heat. Also since my 3rrod seamed to be more of a glitch,(and first time ever) than the more permanent kind of 3rrod I'm going to fix the problem before it starts.


t-maxxracer32 If I run into any problems doing the x-clamp (delete) mod, I'll give you a call. But on the other hand did you ever think that maybe letting the 360's go like that might be causing the dependability problems after the fact?

Also, in conjunction with x- clamp removal(gonna bolt the chip set strait to the mother board) I'm gonna remove some of the internal baffles in the grates to allow more air in. How does that sound guys?

I thought the 2 RRoD was a heat issue, 3 RRoD is a hardware failure. Usually it means that solder connections under the chips are not making contact, which is why replacing the X-clamp with spacers and tightening the hell out of it usually works.

May be it is, But all I know there's some thing wrong with the gpu. And I say "glitch" because why else would it work fine a few min after the fact...or immediately after in my case, just powering it on a different way:neutral:

If it had true broken solder connection, powering it on/off sure ass hell wouldn't have gotten me any ware.

Now wouldn't over heating come before power failure? solder melts at 200 to 840 °F, So lets go right in the middle at 300-450*F cause I know they wouldn't use the cheapest grade solder cause it's a bad conductor of electricity(and corrodes) And I'm almost positive they didn't use silver solder cause that's way to expensive. But back on topic, I know for a fact it never it got hot enough to melt the solder.....that's Hot!:diablo: The hottest it ever got was some were around 98 case temp right behind the chips, But that was with the cd drive running full bore playing halo3. (My computers drive gets ef'in hot two, what gives? but i digress)

It's not about melting the solder; it's that the connections either were never made, or vibrations in the console cause them to make contact intermittently. Doing the clamp mod puts more pressure on the connnections and sometimes is enough to fix them.

generally the 3 rings just mean a cold solder joint and its an easy problem to fix. hit me up if you have any problems because it really is not that hard. I actually have a few 360s i need to fix this weekend (tomorow morning possibly) so if you want me to make a video for you ill try and get it done tomorow morning.

typically the xclamp fix will indefinetly fix the xbox because it is so tight that it cant have a cold solder joint but whos to say really..

add some fans and stuff if you want.. I added a set of fans to mine and got an upgraded whisper fan.


2 rings is supposed to mean that the system simply overheated. 3 rings is a number of issues but usually is caused because of a cold solder joint like you said.

ive done what they call a "reflow" fix where you heat up the cpu and gpu with a heat gun untill the solder joins back together but that leads to more problems because you are heating up a large amount of the xbox for a minute or 2.

but ya the best fix is to get some washers and nuts then tighten it up real good like you said. Also on every xbox i fix i get 2 pennies and wrap them up with electrical tape so no copper shows then i glue them to each ram chip on the back. (where those sticky baindaids are usually at. this applies pressure to those and the copper allows them to cool off.

on a side note. on the newest round of elites they dont even have these ram chips on the back, and this is just another thing they fixed from the previous versions.



Ive messed around with the 360s with the case off and leave them on for hours to test the heat and have never had them get even close to "overheating"

honestly i just think its a malfunction with them that xbox has a hard time fixing (they may have it now with their newer boards----even the halo 3 editions have problems and they made a new board since then--)
