I want to do an electric conversion on something I can actually ride and can't find any decent go-kart frames locally so I was looking into a scooter or 3/4 wheeler. What kind of motor would I need to get one of these up to at least 35 MPH and what kind of batteries as well as distance could I get out of them? These guys have a 5kw-10kw motor for around $300 as well as a controller and what-not for it and the pricing seems reasonable if it's reliable. What kind of wattage do I need to get one of these moving with my 210 pounds riding along? Ideally I'd like something that could get up to 50 MPH or more, but I think for that kind of speed I should look into a standard bicycle as it would require less power (and less money).

I'm guessing this would be for commuting? I had a 99 Trailboss 250 which is very similar to the 95 Sportsman in the second link (mind was white and red with white rims though) and there not that great to be honest. They handle and ride like garbage to be honest and I got it stuck countless times. :lol: Personally, I'd find a nice Odyssey or Pilot, although the Pilot is almost impossible to find and ALOT of $$$$ for a descent one, you can find Odysseys very cheap with a bad or no motor at all. I bought one for $50 with a basically useless motor with the plans of a hopped up SnoPro 440 going in it, similar to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COH0V-WKZ1s around 4:10 is pretty good. :lol:
Anyway, Odyssey would be my choice by far. Alot of possibilities with em...

Power equirements for a pilot or odessey are alot more because of the weight. I'd keep it simple with a kart. There are alot out there with indepedent front suspension and a swingarm rear setup that won't beat you to death and weigh about half as much as a odessey. Kart would be simpler to convert too. Odessey does have brakes up front and more rollover protection than a kart though.

I'd do the 4-wheeler...by the time you rip out the motor and fuel system, you'll have a fairly light rig. You can license those in Montana, right? That site you linked above has some good stuff there. Might be doing some shopping there for work one of these days.

If I can get my hands on a welder I may weld up my own kart frame. Too bad I can't find one like my Dad bought for my brother and I when we were kids. Little Honda engine only put out 5.5HP but it was enough to get his 200+ pounds up and flying when he did his little safety check on it...we ended up with a throttle limiter :lol:
