Mensa

Anyone from RCM a member?

_paralyzed_ 02.25.2010 05:59 PM

I was going to join but zeropointbug told me it doesn't really exist:lol:

(j/k zpb, settle down!!)

What are the criteria for being a member? I have some intelligence but not much fancy school learnin'.

Are you, PBO?

BrianG 02.25.2010 06:17 PM

I asked them if I could join but didn't pass the test when I failed to spell "IQ" correctly.

zeropointbug 02.25.2010 06:37 PM

I don't get it, aren't we all members of RCM? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Funny man here, we got a funny man here! Paralyzed J/K :mdr:

_paralyzed_ 02.25.2010 06:44 PM

eh, I'm rarely serious about anything. Life is too short to take things to heart

"Mensa is an international society with only one criterion for membership: a score on a standardised IQ test higher than that of 98 per cent of the general population"

Think that means you have an IQ of 130 if you pass

ooh, my last standardized test placed me in the top 95th percentile for the nation.

I need to take an I.Q. test someday.

You didn't mention if you are a member:whistle:

What does Mensa do? Do they put those brains to work to help further mankind and the common good? Or is it just people banding together and being smug because they have high IQ? (No sarcasm here, honestly want to know)

PBO 02.25.2010 07:44 PM

The latter I'm guessing...

"About Mensa

Mensa is a not-for-profit society. Its purposes are to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity, encourage research into the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence, and to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members.
All kinds of people are in Mensa

You'll find all sorts of people in Mensa. But Mensans worldwide have one thing in common: they're bright.

Mensa is an international society with only one criterion for membership: a score on a standardised IQ test higher than that of 98 per cent of the general population.

So no matter what you think or how you vote, why not consider joining us? We're always on the lookout for new members to further enrich our diversity of abilities, interests and opinions.
Mental and social stimulation.

If you enjoy brain-teasers, stimulating articles and lively exchanges of views, you'll appreciate TableAus, our monthly magazine, which incorporates the Mensa International Journal. If you like to discuss world problems or the latest in science and technology, you're sure to find like-minded people at a Mensa event. Perhaps you just want to relax and exchange repartee with others who'll get your jokes and add their own quips. Many find Mensa a welcome relief.

Mensa offers opportunities to meet people, exchange ideas and make new friends at your intellectual level. Quick minds are welcomed; instant communication and comprehension are the rule rather than the exception."

I'm sure they do what they do with good intentions, but it's very easy to come off as a "we're better than you" or "I only want to associate with other really smart people" kind of thing.

zeropointbug 02.25.2010 08:41 PM

I'd be interested in what they talk about on the forums. I haven't taken an IQ test in a long while, I think the last time I took one I got 140 something, but not an official one, just a medium length test on the internet.

haha

Has anyone heard of anything productive come from anyone from Mensa group?

fastbaja5b 02.25.2010 09:24 PM

I actually took an "Mensa approved" IQ test a few yrs ago and was made a member, albeit not a very devoted one lol. I don't really think someone's IQ is the be all and end all as to whether or not they will or won't suceed. So yes a member, no not a very good one though :)

PBO 02.25.2010 09:44 PM

I was invited to join after sitting a test for my employer at the time...I declined the invitation, felt too much like "a "we're better than you" or "I only want to associate with other really smart people" kind of thing."...bit weird really but I'm interested if anyone has a different view or experience

fastbaja5b 02.25.2010 09:50 PM

lol yeah they do like to maintain the "superior" culture thing...

That was my biggest issue as well, and I was 23-24 and it was far more fun to do other things on my Saturday nights.
