new losi buggy speed build....
 

I love crazy fast speeds. i also like to get other people there who might need some help. there is about 10 of us now, where i live, who has knocked on the 100mph door or has already surpassed it..

after a few emails, i decided to put together a thread to show exactly how i got there so anyone else who wants to can do so without throwing a ton of cash at experimenting on how to do it.

so...the newest build:


i got a race roller from a friend of mine who wanted to beef up his e-maxx.


this is a 1.0 race roller.however, any losi 8ight buggy will work for all my mods.


so after some negotiation i traded him an FLM e-maxx chassis, flm front and rear shock towers, some battery boxes, flm front and rear skidplates and a monster mamba esc for the race roller. it was brand new, and i have 4 extra, never used chassis for it. i feel like i got a good deal.

anyway, i love the losi 8ights. i have 3 others and wanted to build another speed car.

so here's a list of mods or equipment i found to be helpful:

1. tekin RX8 or monster mamba (or any esc that can run 6S)
2. neu 2650
3. losi rally tires(GRP) these stick awsome.
4. RC8 wing. this provides WICKED downforce.
5. 43t spur or a (45T steel spur)
6. 30T pinion (i have up to 35T as well) you can get them at Kershaw designs.
7. RCM motor mount (this allows for HUGE pinions)

i use these because i run steel spurs for the most part and they are alot more quiet than steel on steel.

look to your left and follow the way...

1. click on the arrow that says gears
2. click on spur gears
3. click on metal
4. select the pitch (mod 1 for the 8ight)
5. select the bore (5mm bore)
6. select the hub style. (hub with set screw)
this narrows down your material to steel or alluminum. i have both. i like the steel better
7. select the number of teeth and the rest of the fields will populate themselves with the rest of the information.
8. click on the part number and all the product details will pop up in a seperate window. if you click on the pdf file on the lower right, you can see it's a pinion gear now. :yes:
8. check out with your preffered method, and they'll be on the way.


shipping is a little pricey, but it's a good place to buy gears that otherwise would never be found in the RC market. So for me, it's a good buy.

i always lock the center diff. A-Main hobbies carries a king headz diff locker for the L8ight that is amazing and only about $13 to buy:

this is essential for the top speeds. i've tried up to 500k diff fluid before, and i can still unload the power to the front wheels so i always lock it.

center drive shaft pins...

mine used to fall out constantly. it drove me crazy. so here is a fix that will keep them locked in and safe:

i resigned myself to having to change the pinion coupler and the driveshaft at the same time, so what i do can't be undone.

i threadlock the screw, and the pin in and then i scuff the coupler and use a drop of jbweld over each hole where the pin sits and let it cure and dry for 24 hours. that will lock the pin in, and jbweld is good for 500+ degrees and works on virtually every metal surface. then i use the cvd boots for good measure. i haven't had one come loose or out since last summer when i did the mod.

I also threadlock the coupler on the shaft so it won't come loose.

for anyone who dosen't know, don't be afraid to threadlock anything. even with the strong locker. any heatgun will soften it up enough to get it off when you need to.

a word about tires....

imo, GRP makes the BEST onroad tires. Losi used to carry the GRP rally tires, but has since discontinued them. i still have quite a few sets left, but for those of you that don't have any, they can be had direct from GRP here:

i get them in about 4 days, and they are great with customer service.

i added a little bling too. the top plate, and the wing mount are aluminum, but don't really add anything but some aesthetic value.

in a couple of weeks, i'l be doing a speed RC8 and showing step by step how to mount a revo spur so you can enjoy those huge ratios, thanks to a Canadian friend who has already broken 100mph up north. :yes: I'm still waiting on a few parts on the build to come in.

yeah, i have but the roads here are very dusty and they tend to slide even with traction compound.

Nice write up, Im pretty much on the same page as you minus 2 diffrence's. I keep my losi a little further off the ground than you since i don't have PERFECT streets. Also i don't keep the wings stock i alway cut off completely the rear lip. The rear lid makes TO MUCH downforce at high speeds and can cause blow over's. I have no rear lip on all 3 of my buggies and ive yet to flip one or blow over over at any speeds!!!

Like stated, foam tires tend to lose traction unless conditions are perfect. However the GRP tires are great for all traction and no ballooning. I do know that these tires are great and are good for speeds up to 112mph so far. I recommended these tires to Rocket a while back after showing him a video of a GTP going 105mph. This same GTP has since increased his speed to 112mph at the last ISC event in November, and can probably push more...

Nice write up man. I prefer the rubber over foam for high speed as well.

You forgot to mention what bodies are used.

Has anyone here tried these tires? can't tell if they are belted or not but they look like they are light weight and have nice inserts.

Also, any trouble with hand glued tires unmounting or is it better to go with premount's that have a lip on the mounting bead.

It would be nice to set up my 8ight for speed at some point since I already have everything else required. (the tires in my avatar great speed run tires too, but one of the foams as blown out making the set unusable).

Seems everyone has jumped ship onto the triple digit buggies lately. :yes: How are your temps after a few passes?

i've never tried to do speed runs without getting my tires pre-mounted. i can't glue tires for shit, so i probably would be the wrong person to offer an opinion there. :yes:

this one was just built. i'm going to be doing some speed runs today with it. last summer i did over 100 with one very similiar.

i can run for probably 5 minutes at a time before cooling with 45/26, then heat becomes more of an issue every few teeth i go up in my pinion or come down in my spur. At 43/30, I can get probably 8-10 full speed passes before i see temps over 165.

in the summer, i run a fan over my motor powered off a 3S heli lipo.

Some of these triple digit buggies should try making it to the ISC events this year. Run them in open wheel class and blow away the 81.75mph record...
