Man, goes to show the advancements in safety tho.

i honestly hope that i see one of the A$$HOLES that arranged that so i can punch them in the mouth, such a beautiful car,if we had cars that fell apart that easily still,i doubt we would have as many bad drivers to begin with, survival of the fittest!--josh

Except if the bad driver also killed a "good" driver.

It sure doesnt look like there was an engine in the Bel Air?

Bondonutz 03.13.2010 12:08 PM

When viewing the video from the top camera angle, when the cars first meet you can see the dash push back in the middle. As if the engine was shoved backwards into the front passenger area.
Not to mention, without the big ol' cast iron block engine the front end would sit up a few more inches.

I think this was kind of pointless. Yeah newer vehicles are constructed better, but the biggest difference here is the airbags the newer car had. Obviously that's where their damage assumptions came from. If the new car had no airbags they would be dead, too. So basically what they're celebrating is the invention of the airbag.

simplechamp 03.13.2010 03:01 PM

Airbags are a big part of it, but I wouldn't go quite as far to say that's the only factor that they relied on. An airbag wouldn't do you much good if a huge cast iron engine block comes flying into your body, or the roof crushes in an pins you in a burning vehicle. It's all the technologies and improvements working in concert that make our cars safer, not just the airbags.

What's_nitro? 03.13.2010 03:24 PM

That's why I said construction was a factor. They said "The driver of the Bel-Aire would have been killed instantly." - that's because the Bel-Aire has no airbags... So what if your car survives the crash if the kinetic energy kills you...

Bondonutz 03.13.2010 06:22 PM

The newer cars have the "crush zones" that collapse to absorb energy where as the older cars are just a huge chunk of steel and the crash energy is transferred right through to the occupant.

suicideneil 03.13.2010 07:37 PM

Seatbelts restrain the occupants and stop them from flying around inside the vehicle in th event of a crash, so those would save your life more than the airbags would ( assuming you wear a seatbelt ). The older car just folded in on itself, completely mangling anyone or anything in the front 2 seats- the newer car just got a nasty dent in the engine compartment, but the occupants would have been fine...
