Mega Motor Overheating Issues
 

Hey guys, I'm currently working on a setup for my tekno 8ight for the track. Need some help as its getting hot and FAST.

Here's the setup:
Losi 8ight 1.0 with tekno conversion
Turnigy 6s 4000 30c
MMM
Mega ACN 22/30/3 (1270kv)
12/46 gearing

Power is OK low on power on the bottom end but plenty from about half throttle and above but the motor overheats VERY quickly. I'd say after 4-5 laps the motor is at 175-180*F. I was told this motor would be sufficient for a buggy application, but perhaps was misinformed? Its a small motor but packs a Huge rotor in that little case. Maybe my timing is off? It is currently at 10degress timing (normal timing on the MMM). I have searched for what is ideal on these 6pole Mega motors but found no conclusive info. If anyone can be of assistance it would be greatly appreciated. If not, anyone want to buy a Mega? :lol:

Rarely see anyone using megas these days. Looks like the kv is a little low, even for 6s use, and the gearing may be a little aggressive ( might not be, 'uggy stuff is beyond me somewhat at the moment ). I would try raising the timing a notch, and you should have the option for '6 pole inrunner' on the MMM programming menu... I think. See if that makes a difference, otherwise I'd say go for the CastleNeu 1512 1800kv and low gearing, or a real neu 1512 in the ~1400-1600kv range.

I think I'm just going to go with 4s 5000 and the castle 1800. Shame this setup didn't work. What wind Neu is within a 1400-1600kv range because that would be ideal for 6s

Crank up the timing I had 2x 22/30/3s out of a twin EDF and tried one in my 36" catamaran on normal timing and burned up the windings, when I posted about that event I was told Megas like high timing so I put the other motor in cranked the timing up to highest on my castle ESC and had no problem at all with the temps after that.

Highest on my MMM is 20* Sure this isn't too much?

yeah, 20deg will cool things down nicely, give you more power too.

Your timing has to be between 15 and 20 for a 6 poles motor. But the motor is probably too small anyway ...
Try a 1518 1800kV or 1515 2200kV, the 1512 (1200Watts) will limit your gearing, and will be less efficient than a stronger Castle (1515 or 1518 1500W or 1700W).
Its better to have a motor overpowerull than underpowerfull, to avoid heating issues, don't forget that motor efficiency falls with temperature !

The 1512 1800kv will be more than enough for a 4s buggy setup I'm sure. I tried 17* timing and still no luck, motor is simply too small for the task. I think a 1518 for the track would be overkill, no?

For a typical buggy or truggy it would be overkill for sure. Most guys use a 1512 2650kv motor on 4s or 3s in a buggy, depends on the size of the track ( speed vs acceleration etc ). A 2200kv motor on 4s should allow for plenty of gearing options, no lack of torque for anything under ~13-14lbs ( I can attest to that personally :lol: ).

The 1512 1800kv motor is pretty new, so havent heard too much feedback about using in racing setups- looks like a good motor for 5 or 6s, with slightly smaller packs > more efficient by drawing less current. Woudnt like to speculate too much since racing isnt the same as bashing, would be wirth checking out the 'uggy sub-forums for some more ideas though for sure :yes: :smile:

Well for comparison I know several local racers run the tekin 1900kv on 4s for about 22-25 minutes so the castle motor should be in that range as well. I'll wait till the first couple reviews of the motor pop up before I buy one since I won't be running the buggy until May anyways (away at school). I was passing the guys running 2200 4s with my mega on 6s and that was on 12/46. 1800kv on 6s would be WAY overpowered for our track.
