problem with venom pro charger
hi all,
just having a little problem with my charger. i bought the venom multifunction pro charger with venom power supply. it stated in the manual that the charger can charge up to 5amp. but the charger have never exceeded 3.4 amp charging my lipo battery even though charging amp was selected at 5 amp. the power supply that came with the charger rated 12v and 5 amp output. if i were to change the power supply to a larger amp rating, would it help? its just taking too long to charge my 4s 5000 mah batt. over 300 min on fast charge. im just afraid that by changing the power supply to a larger amp rating, it might overload it and burn my charger. let me know what you guys think. cheers, Moe |
It doesn't matter how many amps your supply can put out, the charger will only use as much as it needs at a given time and will not be damaged.
Per the charger's datasheet, it can output a max. of 50 watts during the charge cycle. So when you select 4s lipo as the battery voltage, the charger limits the current draw. The max you can charge at 5 amps would be 9 cells or a 3s lipo. Your power supply would need to be upgraded as well if you bought a more powerful charger. It's only capable of 60 watts sustained output, which is fine for the Venom Pro. To charge a 4s pack at 5 amps would require a minimum of ~90 watts of power from the supply. It's a good idea to have some headroom, so a 10 amp supply (120 watts) would be smart. |
I think the 50W chargers can be misleading for people not familiar with electronics because they see it can charge at 5A, and up to 6S, etc. but don't realize it can't do both at the same time. If you want to be able to charge your 4s 5000mah pack at 1C or more you'll have to upgrade both your charger and power supply

+1 that charger is a copy of my charger and it has a 50w limit. you can charge 2s lipo at 5a, 3s at 4.4, 4s at 3.4, 5s at 2.6 and 6s at 2.2. solution? i got a 200w charger. i can now charge my 4s at 10a. http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...r_&_discharger that's the charger i use and it is great. |
hmmm, i guess its time to upgrade to a better charger. im thinking the hyperion eos0720i. or maybe save some money by getting one of the cheaper charger and get myself a new lipo as well.
thanks for clearing that up for me guys. appreciate it a lot. |
