How to pull apart an ofna torsen diff?
I got one of those ofna 1/8th torsen diffs cheap on ebay, because I allways wanted to take a look at them...
Now that I have one, I can't take a look at it, because it seems do be impossible to disassemble it. I looked at the instructions and know what I'd have to do theoretically but it just doesn't move:whip: Anyone ever had one of those and has a hint for me on how to pull this d**n thing apart? |
Maybe the screws are threadlocked, or its just really tight- give it some welly...
|
No, the problem isn't to untighten the screws, the problem is to pull this ring-thing off the diff.
According to the manual, there are no screws that hold this ring in place... |
It might be pressed on?

Does this help? It looks like you can just pull off the cover and then push the four pins out with a punch.
Oh wait you have the manual... Oh well. Have you tried putting the gear back on and using it for leverage to twist the cover off? |

And yes "just pull off the cover" is what I thought, but if it was that easy I wouldn't have startet this thread:lol: Believe me, this is really not as easy as it should be. I don't want to use pliers or the bench vice, because with that I would probably damage the diff... |

What gear do you mean? The spur gear?
I never got that off either, because the drive cup is in the way, and the drive cups can only be removed after the cover is off and the internal gears are removed... Normally I like puzzles, but this is supposed to be a diff  |
Oh right, I see now. I should start paying attention, huh???
So the cover has to slide off the side opposite the gear. You can't twist it at all? I guess some liquid wrench might help if it could get under the cover. |
Nope, absolutely no movement on the cover, and it's definately the first thing that has to go.
What's a liquid wrench? |
It's a penetrating oil. Like for removing rusted bolts.
|
Ah, ok!
Penetrating oil I do have... |

"Don't use unnecessary violence! Get a bigger hammer..."
Looking for the oil right now. |
Torsen diffs
I have two Torsen diffs, and have had both of them apart for the same reason. I just wanted to see how they are setup and work. The outer cover is pressed over two "O-rings" (top & bottom) which make it a little bit tight for removal. You just have to get it started and it slides right off. It has been a while but I believe I used a small flathead screw driver to pry it loose. Once you break the seal from the "O-rings" it will slide right off farely easily. Be careful though because once you open it up everything can fall right out if you are not careful. It is a weird little thing, but it works. I have never mounted either of them on a vehicle yet, but one of these days I will have to try one of them out.
