HPI 3 speed? Are they worth for BL?
 

Im just wondering if the 3-speed tranny is worth for BL power. Ive read about the smooth transition from low to high in nitro savage on various forums. Most of them are satisfied with it. Plus HPI claims that the 3-speed is more durable since hardened steel is used for many of the gears and hubs. inputs will be greatly appreciated.

I run a 3 speed on a nitro. I am happy with it once you get it adjusted. It is a pain to adjust. I was thinking of converting mine and leave the three speed on it.

Mine worked awesome the first time I tried it but then had something happen to my esc and had to send it to Mike to have it checked out. Was running the 9918/9L combo on 14 cells. Can't wait to get the stuff back and really get to try it out.

The construction of that threespeed is tough.

You won't need a 3 speed, it would be nice to work with a small motor, such as the 1930/1940 and some lipo's. It would be one light and quick

The 3speed will take a bigger motor as well. it is strong enough if that's your concern.

has someone longterm experience with the 3speed holding up with a strong BL system? i read many threads of nitro drivers that were claiming the 3speed to be quite weak. actually much weaker as a fully modded 2speed.
but well that is just what i read. can be biased.

in principle i do not see that much need for multiple speed trannys with electro motors. in contrast to nitro engines they do not gain their torque from rpm.
but i agree that the imagination of a lightweiht lipo sav with a smaller motor and a multiple speed tranny has some attractivness. :-)

I asked this question because HPI claims that hardened steel is used for many of the gears and hubs in this 3-speed. Im not really concern about the speed though. If in long term they are not as durable as HPI claimed, then I think I'll just stick with the 2-speed with Heavy duty 2nd gear.

That heavy duty 2nd speed is bulletproof.. without a doubt.

I don't like the idea of metal to metal gears.

i just finished my bl conversion and my three speed didnt even shift unless i used 16+ cells and stock wheels, CRAZY fast once all three speed kicked in(still have to gear it down), i took it to my LHS and those dude were digging it, i would say if you have it go with it but, the gearing has to be low. i converted my savage to 32p and use a 66 e-maxx spur with a 16t pinion(9920 + 7xl) and it was still to high of a gearing to use all gears to there max potential.

Sounds like you going to need to adjust the shift points on it.

nah not really once i ran 16+ cells (first test was 12-14) it seemed to shift at the end of its powerband.

with BL you can have it shift a bit earlier.
