Replacement for VXL?

Would like a new motor in summer for my Slash 4x4.

I really like the VXL 3500kv motor, it's only a small can but it's a nice speed. Downside is it runs hot.

Wanting something with a little more of everything, bit more speed, power and efficiency - I guess most of these are a given with Neu quality but what should I be looking at KV wise?

And would a Neu be fine running on the VXL-3 ESC?

Cheers,
Nick.

If you want to keep your same lipos then look for a Neu (1509 maybe?) of the same or slighty higher kv. Slightly higher kv will give more speed, plus you'll be able to gear up a bit for more speed, and the Neu will be more powerful and efficient.

I tried a finned 1509 3300KV but its pretty big which meant I has to go to 18T which was a bit much... I was thermalling my R1Pro consistently after 5 mins racing.

I put in a medusa 50mm 3300kv with 14T / 54T and it seems much happier temp wise..

VXL is a 2-pole motor, Neu's, 1/8 Castle Creation motors, Medusa's and several other use 4-poles.

I've ran a 4-pole motor (medusa) off an older Non-Waterproof Vxl before just fine(I have video), But my Waterproof VXL didn't do very well with a 4-pole.

I think they added a rev limit or something as it would take off great then start to shutter at higher rpms.

Having twice the amount of poles to count the VXL-3 hits a 2-pole rev limit half as fast.

For two pole motors try here.

Look at the 9L to 6L size and speed of 2-pole motors.

Good point Arct1k, the gearing would be limited by the larger size of the Neu. You could go for a lower kv though, like 2500-3000kv maybe?

Hmm, would seem I would need a new ESC then really, shame there isn't much choice waterproof wise.

Come on Castle, fill the market gap. ;)

Thanks a lot for the advice chaps, some great pointers I'll keep in mind.

The Novak HV motors also make a good choice. They will run off the VXL.

so will the epic duo 550. plus it uses the same pinions as the vxl. i ran both on the vxl on 3s and the duo definately runs cooler and stronger. stormer has em for $100. i use the 6.5 (3400kv?) and it rips!

I'm lookingat using the Neu 1509/1Y 3600kv in my Slash 4x4 when it comes in. The VXL motor isn't bad, but this Neu will be more efficient and powerful. Should be about the same on the track but cooler runtimes and more ability to gear up if needed.

I'm running 1509 2Y's in both my 4x4 Slashys on 3s, they run cool and are more than fast enough on the track geared 54/17-18.

A friend of mine just spoke with Joe Ford at CC. They actually tested the 1509/1Y in a Slash 4x4 in the grass. Don't know how long they ran for but the highest temps recorded was 104F. Sounds like a winner.

I want the higher Kv since my track's only CORR rule is 2s lipo only.

Just an FYI a tekin R1 Pro could not keep up with this setup on 2s and on 3s the motor got v toasty to... On 3s 18T thats about 60MPH+ gearing...
