Hardest pinion
My buggy eats pinions. I've rc monster motor mount, well mounted without any movement and my gear mesh is good but my buggy keep eating pinions. Especially after some jumps pinions begin to deforming and after 2-3 weeks they are totally dead. My buggy is a hyper 8 with regular center diff and steel spur gear. I tried mikes pinions and they didn't hold up too:(
I'm considering to get robinson or ofna. Which one would be more durable? |
You could try a plastic/delrin spur. I don't think the RRP or Ofna will be any harder than Mike's pinions.
I think the problem might be (chassis) flex. If you have plastic chassis braces you could try some alu ones. I've been using RCM for a long time now and no problems so far (8 months on Savage Flux, 4 months on RC8Te, 2 months on Hyper Mini STe). |
My braces are aluminium:(
|
you have a gear mesh problem then, or you dont have a hardened pinion..
Try a different spur i have pinions that are a year old, always run on steel spurs that barely have any wear |
I've been running my Hyper 8 forever with very little wear. There has got to be some flexing going on that is chewing them up.
|
unfortunately I can't change the spur with a plastic one because there isn't such product for hyper 8. My spur is like new and don't have sharp edges. I have enough experience about adjusting gear mesh. My problem is soft pinions or my motor moves on landings but It looks tight and mount screws and pinion screws are fastened with locktite.

Would a little grease or something like that help?
I have a race weekend these weekend and don't have any chance to find permanent solutions. I live in Turkey and here we can't find even mod1 pinions around 12-18 range. |
What motor are you running? When is the last time you checked/changed the bearings in your motor?
|
Try not to land jumps while on power. Chassis flex alone wouldn't ruin pinions, but if you land while on power and the chassis flexes a bit, the teeth will get eaten up. That's my guess anyways.
AFAIK, Mike's "Extra Hard" pinions are the hardest you'll find that wont just shatter... :mdr: |
my motor bearingsare fine(medusa36/70/2000)
I know that I shouldn't land on power but it's very hard to pay attention to that on race conditions:( |
Just release the throttle before you land? Maybe your mesh is too tight. Try the paper trick from nitro. You need a small amount of play.
I'm racing my 8ight with a lot of chasis and RRP pinions and they stay fine. |
Slipperential might help with the landing on power issue. And you can easily try both hardened steel and Delrin spurs.
|
I fastened Motor mount, motor and pinion screws again today. I hope it can handle the race on Sunday. If problem continues I'll look for further solutions again for second leg two weeks later. Thanks for all advices..
