Smallest motor for brushless DTX Firehammer?
I have a DTX Firehammer MT that's hardly been used for several reasons (can't find time to take it out to a large space where the noise won't be a problem, made mixture too rich with oil so it fouled the plug, can't play with it around my son, etc.). So I've been thinking about converting it to brushless. I love the runtime of the gas motor, but there are issues that make it less convenient for me to run it.
I know bigger is better and would run cooler with additional size and torque, but I can't afford $200-$400 for just a motor. I would love to have that budget, but just don't. The DTX Firehammer MT doesn't seem too immensely heavy (feels only a bit heavier than a fully decked out 1/8 MT in ready to run form) and it's only 2WD which is less load on the motor. I have a Neu-Castle 2200kV motor that's quite strong. Would that on 6s be enough to push the FH MT around at about 35-40mph speeds without overheating/burning up? If not, what would be the minimum size motor? Ideally, I would like a huge motor that's rated approx. 1000kV and run 8s or even lower kV and higher voltage, but I doubt I could find a motor like that I could afford. Thanks. |
if you want to be inexpensive go with a big hobbyking type outrunner or inrunner motor but you want to almost match horse power to original gas motor

Sorry for the bad news but if your budget will only allow a couple hundred dollars to be spent, forget about it. The MMM ESC is not ideal to handle the excessive weight of the much larger RC. SO..... you'll need another Motor, (Much larger and lower KV) and a ESC. Even 6s is not enough to run the more powerful motor required efficently.
Your Firehammer may "seem" only a little heavier, but 5-6lbs is a really big deal. |

Electric 1/5 is not a "budget" project. You can probably find something that will make it run for your budget, but I guarantee you wont be happy with it in the end. Your just asking for headaches IMO. |
maybe, just maybe, you might be able to use a castle 1717 motor and 6s lipo....if you geared for 35mph or less to start out with.
it is only 2wd and the duratrax firehammers are built light compared to most 1/5 trucks. once you removed the enigne and gas tank, it should be down to maybe 17-18lbs. there was a point when my savage weighed 18 lbs and my stock 2200kv motor never went higher than 150f when geared for 40mph. so long story short: try a 1717 and 6s on a MMM esc geared for around 35mph to start with. |
my opinion is the same. Maybe gearing conservatively and using mech brakes could work.

Did a little search and came up with this. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...ght=Firehammer
Should be some useful info at the very least. |
Thanks guys. I remember that thread now...completely forgot about it...thanks for linking it Overdriven.
I'll try to find a lower kV motor (that's not a KB45...those don't seem to last very long) before I go any further into this idea. Thanks. |
You could take a look at the Infinite 1/5 stuff at www.okhobby.com.
I have no idea if its good or not... but price/spec ratio is pretty good ;) |
