SC18 hot motor
Ok, so the SC18's drivetrain I've heard is rather tight, leading to a hot stock motor.so I loosened the belts and the mesh and installed a new reedy stump puller (brushed,I know....) ran it through one 6 cell nimh and it got to 230'F!!
The batteries were at 87, and the esc at 110. I really don't know what to do.I used the suggested gearing that reedy had on the box, should I still gear down? Any other ideas? And for reference, the SC18 is a beltdrive version of an RC18T,all the same gearing and diffs.--Josh |
Is it fast, Maybe you need to gear up ?
I have nothing to offer but to play w/gearing. If it was something else obvisously more than the motor would be hot ? Please post some nice pics, would love to see it up close. Ben thinking about getting one. |

brushed motors don't get hot if you undergear them. check for binding somewhere? maybe re-tighten the belts a little? |
I did some checking on the AE forums and the general idea is that the drivetrain is to tight from the factory. So,I did a small mod with a dremel to remove the front belt tensioner and it rolls MUCH easier now and I relubed the drivetrain. And then I installed a custom aluminum heatsink so hopefully this will do it.
@bondonutz--I'd honestly hold off on the purchase until AE fixes the drivetrain issue, there's no way in he'll it was supposed to be that tight.some people are converting the more efficent RC18B series into an SC,maybe there is a possibilty? But if your ok with fiddling with it to cool it down and a motor change,I'd say go with it (for some reason BL SC18 don't heat up?) but other than that I've beat the ever loving piss outta mine and it takes it like a champ!--Josh |
Ok,I just did 2 back to back runs and the esc and batts were the same, motor however was at 178. Do you guys think this is acceptable? I mean it is close to a 50 degree drop? I guess I'll just see how it goes from here. I did notice that I had more runtime as I'm up to 12min approx. Over my sub ten minute times before.--Josh

It's possible that the belts are loosening/stretching a bit as you run, and easing the tension on the drivetrain, allowing it to run cooler as time goes on. I've heard other people report this.
I'll have to see when mine gets here, picked it up used for $80, only 3 packs run through it. Hopefully can get a few bucks out of the 2.4GHz system and stock elecs to put towards a BL system. I told myself I'd never get another mini, but when this came out I knew I'd get one. Should be much more capable than my Mini-T though, that left a bad taste in my mouth for mini's. |
Besides running hot,it's an amazing performer.you'd think with how low it is that it couldn't jump but on smaller jumps (don't try the 1/8 track ) it handles great and like I've already said. I beat the piss outta mine and I only broke 1 shock. So with some decent electronics and a little tinkering, you won't find a mini that will beat it.--Josh
