Hackint0sh... Anyone do it?

Looking into getting Mac OS X running on my AMD PC..

Wondering if anyone else does this?
If I can get it working, I'd end up buying a legit key soo.

I have tried it with a couple of my PCs. The biggest problem is getting all of the hardware to work. Basically, if the hardware never came in a Mac or Macbook (such as the Intel GMA 4500M graphics chipset in my laptop), then it's nearly impossible to find a Kext (same thing as a driver in Windows) for it, unless you want to write your own, in which case you would be pronounced insane and shot immediately. Unless, of course, you write drivers for hardware on a daily basis.
I had a bit more luck with my desktop PC, though my ATI 4830 graphics card never was quite right. Something wrong with the framebuffer because I had to use a twice modified 4870 kext that was again modified to work with a different brand of the 4830. So the screen would kinda freeze for half a second every 2 or 3 seconds, which is quite frustrating. It's supposedly fixable by flashing a different BIOS onto my card, but I don't really want to go that far.

If you have the supported hardware, it should be a piece of cake. I used a Kalyway 10.5.2 disc for all of my installs, and it goes on almost like Windows. Just make sure you read the directions and the Kalyway wiki. I would highly suggest that disc because it also has Kexts for AMD CPUs, so it's quite likely that it would work for you.

I thought it was quite a fun project, but I eventually got to a dead end with my graphics card and realized that I wouldn't really use OSX for anything since I'm so accustomed to Windows.

I would suggest InsanelyMac if you need help with any of the hardware stuff. It really helped me out a lot.
(Not sure how you'd buy a legit key since Apple doesn't really want people installing OSX onto any computer, but you could buy the Leopard or Snow Leopard disc for like $30, I think.)

Good luck,

That's exactly what I was thinking, if I was gonna make a hackint0sh, at least give Apple SOME credit.. if it works perfectly.
I highly doubt my entire rig is going to run OSX perfectly.

I'm running into a deadend with my harddrive so far, I have my two primary SATA's for W7 and backups. Don't want OSX to touch those, no more spare SATA drives...

iATKOS, iDeben keep running into waiting for root device..

It's a fun project, if it works!

I'm on Insanelymac, getting some great help with a Brazilian guy (Lutach?)...

Anyways, I'd be mostly using it to show off, maybe iLife (iWeb, and iMovie..)

Oh but you can.
If you use different distros specified for the AMD Processor, all you need are kext's.

Indeed, it is quite possible on AMD processors. As far as your SATA drive goes, not sure what to do. You might try installing OSX on a large flash drive if you have one (8GB or better. 16 or 32 would be optimal) or maybe an external hard drive. If you can't get a direct install to work, you could just use a virtual machine, though it's a bit slower.

Yup, using OS X on my VMWare Workstation
Would rather dual boot.

Anyways, I put some space aside on my backup drive to try and setting it up, just running into a kernel panic, and a few other errors after rebooting after installation

I would go with linux personally. It has a ton of customization features I bet you could make it look just like osx if that's what you are after.

Right now I'm dual booting Linux Ubuntu and Win 7. Games only happen on win 7, but ubuntu pwns windows in the music and customization department. There aren't any viruses either. And it's free. And it's probably faster, if that's an issue.

And honestly, Linux has more available software then osx.

ehh, off topic...
