BULLETPROOF your E-Maxx Tranny
I have learned that upgrading all the gears in my E-Maxx trans is not quite enough. There's still 2 weak spots... those 2 thin carter pins! I've broke them about 3 times now. Well I doubt I'll break them anymore. I replaced them with solid steel wheel pins. Then I welded the ends to the gear so that they won't come back out. This has been the only weak spot in my truck since I've fully upgraded my truck. Hopefully it's finally 100% BULLETPROOF now. Time will tell....

Nice hope it works for ya! The only thing i would worry about it the heating cycles you put the steel threw welding it...It prob weakened it...But like you said time will tell

I wouldn't worry about the heat, doesn't look like he did much welding and what he did was focused on the gears which should still be plenty strong.

True True but we all know Murphys law

I took those gears, annealed them and tapped them for 4mm set screws. Then hardened them and used the smaller one as a pinion gear for an 1/8 buggy with a steel center gear. Worked ok, but they did wear more than a rcm pinion. No idea what metal they are made out of, probably not the best stuff you can get. Anyways, I always ysed cut off pieces of hex key to replace the weak azz roll pins. Cut to lenght and then pressed in place with the bench vice.
If someone did not want to well those wheel pins should do, add some green loctite and they will never come out. Might be easier than a weld like that, which turned out very nice t-bro. I weld alot and that is not the easiest thing to do. I have also used rcm pinion gears as replacements for the input shaft gears, grind a flat on the shaft and use red loctite on the pinion setscrew. I did that when I converted an old emax tranny to single speed with the gmaxx adapter, then modded a revo tranny input shaft so that I could use the revo spec slipper setup and mod1 mgt spurs. The old emaxx tranny internals are mod1, so you can replace the top gears with mod1 pinions. |
