I want some new shocks.

My DB17 is roughly 14-16lbs depending on which batteries and tires I'm running. I want to upgrade the stock shocks.

I know people have done the LST shock conversion, but are there any other options?

Thanks

you could use baja shocks. i didnt like them because i wasnt heavy enough but they may be the ticket for ya

X2 on the Baja shocks. Was planning to try them on my Flux but it was way to light.

You could always upgrade to the alu BB shocks, or run 2 shocks on each corner though I'm not a big fan of that.

I doubt my truck is heavy enough for baja shocks. A baja weighs over 20 lbs without fuel.

I also don't like the double shock idea. What are the alu BB shocks you speak of?

HPI Alu big bore shocks

If you want to upgrade the shocks to handle the extra weight then try stiffer springs and or heavier oil in the stock shocks first and see if you like the results. They are a fairly decent shock.

If you can add some sort of shock tower support that would help as well as they bend a lot.

Are these the spring people are talking about when they say White Hellfire springs? Link

I like that shock tower bracing, real neat.

Are the stock shock towers supposed to be slanted at all or straight up and down? Mine are slanted but they were like that when I got the truck.

Yes those are the springs.

The shock towers will permanently deform over time. Left deformed, right new.

The diff casing angle on the front means the tower would lean in toward the center of the truck a bit but the rear should be close to straight up and down if it isn't bent.

Alright, guess its time for some new shock towers.

thzero 09.17.2010 10:52 PM

Yes. The front shock tower slants back due to the kick up at the front for caster. The rear shock tower does slightly lean forward.

Those are the springs. The Flux shocks (and the BB versions) use the Hellfire springs. I'm running white on my 17lb 5T, however I am thinking about going to the yellows.

Here's a list of all the springs:

#86549 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.5mm 12.5 COILS (BLUE 71gF/mm)
#86550 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.5mm 10.5 COILS (SILV 89gF/mm)
#86551 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.8mm 14.5 COILS (PINK 134gF/mm) (Flux kit part)
#86553 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.8mm 12.5 COILS (WHIT 159gF/mm)
#86554 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.8mm 11.5 COILS (YEL 177gF/mm)
#86555 SHOCK SPRING 18x80x1.8mm 10.5 COILS (RED 196gF/mm)

Are those the FLM Losi standoffs?

Thanks a bunch for this spring info. I'll give the stock shocks another chance with some white shocks and 45w oil.

I'm running that on my flux and it does a pretty good job (has the tube and an extra spacer on them)

Bmr4life 09.18.2010 02:05 PM

So the purpose of the tube and spacer are to make the truck ride lower?

Muggydude 09.18.2010 07:58 PM

No! to make it ride higher and be stiffer!

Crap, now I'm feeling stupid. I get the be stiffer, but how does this make it ride higher?

Is this change noted in the manual or any pictures anywhere?
