Need help from some xbox gurus

I've got a problem here. I bought a new 360 and needless to say after a week It had the 3 red rings. My last xbox had a disc drive go out and it was trashed. So I'm in a situation where I have no receipt for my new rrod 360 and my old one has been modded so I can't trade them In. So my question is, can I take the good drive out of my new 360 and drop it into my old one with the junk drive and have it work? Or will I have to reflash the new drive to work in my old xbox? And if I do have to reflash the new drive, how do you do it?--Josh

I looked into this a while back, I don't think you can swap drives unless they are the exact same one, Microsoft used 5-6 different drives.

google is your friend...

you can swap drive, you can use any drive in any xbox but you have to recover the code from the old drive and flash that code to the new drive so that it matches the drive that is suposed to be in your xbox.

it really isnt that hard, its done the same way you would flash a dive to play copied games

my current xbox came with a lite-on drive but i changed it out to a ben-q when the lite-on failed because the ben-q is repairable and the bios doesnt brick if you fail a flash

How exactly do I go about flashing the new drive? And what software will I need to do get the key off the old drive? And how do I even connect the old drive to my computer?--Josh

Are these both the same model 360? Or by "new" do you mean the one with the built-in wireless and such? If they are both the same "older" style you should be able to just swap them over with no trouble. I've got 3 different consoles and I've swapped the drives around by mistake (because they all look alike) and they worked fine.

I'm kind of assuming you bought one of the newer style 360s because if the drive cases were the same you would've tried swapping them already, right?

No, I meant it was a "new" old 360, LOL. I'll try swapping drives tomorrow,if it doesn't work ill try to find put how to flash the new drive.--Josh

How could you loose a reciept for a $300 system? Anyway, I highly doubt the system will give a crap if you swap out the DVD drive. I've swapped HDD's in different Xbox's in the past and it worked just fine.

Now the matter of getting my game saves from my old Xbox via a USB stick to work on my new slim xbox has been....frustrating

nice to know you dont have a clue what you are talking about again:whip:

ok i will try and explain this if you want but you may have better luck watching people do it on youtube, you can learn alot on youtube, just look up "how to flash a xbox360". the only thing you will do diffrent is you are recovering the drive code from the bad xbox drive and flashing it to the good xbox drive, then if you want you can change the firmware on the drive or leave it alone

programs you need are
- jungle flasher
-dosFlash V1.8

Fine, whatever.

ThanKs semi pro,but something wierd happened today, I accidentally switched what I though was the good drive into my old 360 but it turns out it was the old one. The only thing I did was clean and re lube it and now it works fine! No stuttering,no wierd laser noises nothing,it works now, WTF? I still plan on flashing the new drive as I'm
sure this one won't last long and I thank you guys for the explanation on flashing, but until then I'm happy I can finally play again! LOL!--Josh
