CC Motors on sale! What gearing and cell count for CC 1518 1y 1800kv

So...for those of you who dont know yet Castle Creations is having a huge sale on their overstocked motors (1518's and 1717 etc) for CHEAP! I picked up a new 1518 1800kv for the revo for 65 bucks , get em while you can!

Anyway what gearing and cell count should I be looking at to power this bad boy? I was wanting a lower KV motor as I plan to run my proline trenchers pretty much full time (except for speed runs). The tires are pretty big (6.9 tall , 3.4 wide).

I was originally going to run the 2200 on both 4s and 6s but since I got the lower KV 1518 I am thinking I may just want to run 6s full time????

I know the rule of thumb is lower kv = more torque so you can gear up for the speed you want. I was planning on buying 4 packs....Should I still buy 2, 2s and 2, 3s or just buy 4 3s packs?

Also, what would be a good place to start for gearing (on either 4s or 6s) for this motor/tire combo on the revo?

I dont need blistering top speed (45 would probably suffice) so not sure if 45 is too much for 4s or not?

Thanks! :)

Do you know about Brians calculator? http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/index.html

def did not, thanks! Very helpful (and detailed!) calculator.

So If I want to gear for 45 on 4s I am looking at 19/36 gears
46mph on 6s comes out to 13/36 gears

Quite a jump in gearing to maintain the same mph when adding an extra 7.4v to the equation!

I was planning on running turnigy packs 3s 5000 25c
or turnigy 2s 5200 30c
or turnigy 2s 5800 25c

I am still thinking two 2s and two 3s would be the best bet. That way I can get a little higher capacity on the 2s packs for a cheaper price but then have the 3s packs for speed runs.

I have heard the 1800kv motor really puts out some torque so maybe 2x 2s would help save the poor revo diffs from turning into powder sooner than needed.

If you ever need to go back to the calculator, its the top sticky in the Brushless section.

Not sure which version of Revo you have, but keep in mind motor clearance to the tranny when selecting gears. Can get a little tricky on Traxxas rigs.

Iremember I wanted a bigger motor for my previous e-revo, but isn't there point where the motor hits the "shock-tower"?

Could a 1520 fit? Thinking of buying another e-revo.

Yes the 1518 does hit the shock mount but if you trim 3-4mm off of it it will clear it. Alternatively the Golden Horizons aluminum shock mount will fit with the 1518 with no trimming involved.
