I'm electronically stupid...

ok, so as for my thread title, believe it or not i am a avionics (electronics) technitian on military aircraft, but when it comes to measuring volts, amps, discharge rates, etc.etc.etc..... IM STUPID!!!! all im good at is removing and replacing, cutting/splicing/soldering, etc.

so basically what im saying, i now understand the hassle of NITRO, i love it, but i just want more FUN time instead of DOWN TIME, to work on this darn thing....

im still waiting on parts for my rustler going stampede, so i haven't even ordered motor or ESC yet... but how hard is it for someone as simple minded as me to get into all this, im a grease monkey, not a math/volt/amperage guru. i want to run brushless/LiPo or LiIon, with the LEAST of hassles....

any suggestions, also is this a direct attachment, or do any capacitors or resistors need to be soldered in anywhere?

i love my NITRO t-maxx, but i DO believe you all that i will love the brushless even more once i finally get it.....

my experience in the past month:
NITRO = 2-4 hrs work time / 15-30 min. play time = this sucks !!!

but i still love the sound/smell of the nitro engines.... what can i say, i've been around 2/4 stroke race bikes my whole life.... im a blue smoke junky so to speak

First off, i think nitro IS a hassle, and you do not need to put any capacitors or resistors anywhere.
You will LOVE brushless, trust me!

With nitro , you may think re-tank and drive, but really, somtimes, most of the time its not true, with electric, drive, charge, adjust, drive, charge, in a contionious pattern.

so i dont have to be a mathmetician.............i love it already....

how about batteries, is it better to make my own battery packs, or are there some pretty good NiMh pre-made packs? im sure i could make my own easy enough, just dont know how to yet, although i guess i could rip open an old radio shack pack to see how its done right......

also, what a good charger to get, i've got a MEGA1 but i dont actually know how long to charge the batteries for, or if im getting a peak charge,

oh yeah, i dont know how to use a multimeter either, like i said before, all that volt/amp/ohm stuff confuses me, and i get the readings mixed up (blew my car stereo amp when i was 18 because of this inability to learn about electricity) lol

i believe in the KISS method....

K - keep
I - it
S - simple,
S - stupid.

its really not complicated at all. I'm only 16 and i understand the majority of it and it really isn't hard to learn at all but for me it had to be broken down into simple, understandable terms.

I use these for making NiMH packs,http://www.modelelectronicscorp.com/...t.html#sptkits,solderless power tubes.
Makes it very easy to build very low resistance packs and also when you want to reconfigure packs, make saddle packs etc.I also only use GP2200s for NiMH cells, they're 4/5 subCs,shorter and lighter, just lets you fit more voltage for the same space and weight compared to subCs(3700s etc).

I think you'll find it really easy once you get started with this stuff, once you get a BL setup up and running (which will be easy if you follow peoples advice and get a set up that is known to work for what you want) then there's much less of the pulling your hair out moments that come with nitro RC.Also, besides the power plant, electric vehicles are much easier to maintain in general since they're not constantly vibrating themselves to bits and covering themselves in sticky fuel.Much better playtime:downtime ratio. Also it's the only choice for real horsepower freaks.

You don't need that much technical/electrical knowledge to start with either really, you can just ask lots of questions and people will keep you right.

furryninjas 04.14.2006 10:33 PM

asking questions is what im good at... i already am pretty sure that i will be using an MGM 80 and a basic 4200 motor, just from asking questions.... now i just gotta save the money and buy the stuff....

when i finish my brushless set-up, my nitro is just going back in the closet isn't it........? LOL

Clostet or Ebay - LOL - You will love this electric stuff - No fumes, no noise unless you hit something or someone at speed lol. And you learn as you go. And the best part - if you have questions - there are quite a bit of people here that will steer you in the direction that you need to go. Have fun....

i would think about what you want .meaning. speed do you want to blow nitro trucks away or just a hassle free set up. there is a lot of different bl out there i have had 2 novak hv bl witch i had nothing but trouble and now a bk bl setup which is off the planet .the more power you go the more upgrades you will need to do .but either way you will not look back . just keep asking the guys on here i wish i did earlier i would saved so much money people on here are so good with there help tell them what setup you are thinking and you will get good advice

Go eBay; it's simply amazing how much some people will pay for stuff. I just sold my nitro Revo last week for $478 (after shipping)! Of course, it had a few hop-ups, but it was a little dirty and scratched in places. I was figuring on about $300 (and would've been happy) considering the condition, but imagine my suprise when the auction ended!

yeah, i may end up doing that, we'll see.... i may keep it around for my son so he can start out with nitro then move to electric...... haha
