Yeah, it would have been nice to have one of those 2 years ago...

Well, back then, finding reliable hardened pinions was a bit of a challenge. Since Mike came out with his pinions (which work fine on both steel and plastic spurs), it's not so much of a big deal. IMO, the only benefit to the plastic spur is quieter operation.

i've tried a bunch of different brands of pinion gears and the best so far are:

robinson racing: wears at a somewhat slow pace. mine lasted ~25 runs.

novak: i've had 2 break from the steel breaking around the grub screw. slow wearing and last about ~50 runs

rc-m: only tried one and it was still wearing out pretty fast until a tooth BROKE off of it. would have lasted about 15-20 runs

castle creations: best i've tried yet. there is little or no wear on the one i'm using in my crt .5. the grub screw is a little soft though. i already stripped one, but they come with a spare. going on 20 runs with almost zero wear at all.

For me its thew noise issue, with the plastic spur you can get it running so smooth.

Our pinions are as good or better than anything else out there - that said, we do get an occasional "dummy" - I have seen perhaps 30 pinion gears with premature wear or broken teeth in the last few years (we have well over 5000 pinions out there) - we also replace worn or broken gears(send damaged gear and we send a replacement).

I have and use RCM pinions in all my stuff and have yet to have one break or get worn down.
