Motor Choice
 
Which one would be better suited for a gmaxx running on 5S?

1518 1Y 1800Kv
1520 1Y 1600Kv
1717 1Y 1580Kv
1717 1Y 1500Kv


The truck will mainly be used for speed runs.

My vote is the 1518, I ran my XXL with the same combo and it pulled strong and stayed cool.

Dont think anyone is a wrong choice, all depends on your spur tooth count and diff ratio to dictate what would be best ?

on 5S the 1518 is the only one that will spin fast enough to do some good speed runs without insanely large gears

5 x 3.7 = 18.5v

18.5v x 1800kv = 33,000rpm (sweet spot is around 45,000rpm, max is 60,000rpm)

of course you could always go with a 1527 .5y race wind, if you have the cash and the time to wait for it to be built...

I always thought the "sweet spot" was closer to around 30-35k RPM?

I like my 1518 1y in my 1/8 buggy on 5s. I keep on gearing it up and it just keeps on taking it no problem, it seems to like being loaded. Currently geared for 50mph without tire ballooning and I haven't seen north of 120 on it yet.

You could be right SC, but I thought the 35K sweet spot was for the actual Neu's and the Castle's were a bit higher like the Meduasa's were?

Either way 33K is going to take a tall pinion and the other options would be even farther away from speed run material.

In my humble opinion, as I am still very much learning :-)

I'm gearing it for 65-70 mph. I can also bump it up and use 6S instead of 5S. I have not run any of these motors except the 2000Kv and 1512 1800Kv from castle and Tekin's 2000 Kv truggy motor in my truggy.

The gmaxx will only be used for speed runs on road. I'm leaning towards the 1518.

I found the difference between 4S and 6S with the 1518 to be staggering, I think the difference between 5S and 6S may not be as extreme, but it will certainly be noticeable :yes:

Here are some pictures of my gmaxx. Right now, it has Lutach's 6S ESC and Castle 2200Kv motor. Spur/pinion combo is 46/15. It also has 8 spider diff gears in there.

It's longer than a regular gmaxx because of the monoblock and setback arms.

Think if I had that kind of cash into a ride I'd run a clear body and a black smooth canned Neu ;-)

So you are running buggy ratio diffs? And what size spur?

If you are running what I think you are I would go with the 1520 and 6s. More torque so you can load the motor more with a larger pinion. Or go with the 1717 and the biggest pinion you can find. I like the 1717 motor, and Pdel seemed to think it was between the 1521 and 1527 in power output, so it is more powerful than the other options you listed. Speed needs power.

Linc, yes I am running buggy gears (43/13) with a 46/15 spur/pinion combo. With the 2200Kv motor and Lutach's ESC, the batteries, motor and esc barely get warm.

I just test-fitted the 1717 and there's a problem with clearance. There is not enough space between the can and the chassis using the RCmonster cd mount (unless I put some spacers at the base of the mount). Besides, if I use the 1717, I have to dremel the mount since a 4mm screw won't fit.

So it seems like the 1520 will be a better choice from what you're saying.

Yeah 1520 will be the way to go for you. You have plenty of pinions sizes to go up, so gearng should not be an issue either.

Well, I finally got to swapping out the 2200Kv motor for the 1520. Can't run it though since the weather here is so crappy. It's raining, windy and cold.

What if all seven motors burn, what then? I would buy more just to be sure:lol:

I only have three of the cc/neu's, two 1512 1,5y and a 1518 1y for my first truggy build, a Hyper ST Pro.

And as someone above mentioned, 6s is the way to go. If you want to use 5s, then slap in the 1518 IMO.
