money in my pockets. need to get rid of some.
so I am in the market for a nice new motor for my 1/8th buggy conversion. Its not really a buggy anymore. its a rear solod axle SC truck.
but i am going to be needing a motor. I am going to running a Mamba Max on 4cells, and figured i'd go with a 2650 Castle/neu motor. is there a "better" motor that you experts would recommend for me? I am curious to see what your opinions are here. My options are going to be pretty open as its tax season and i will have a relatively large return to splurge with. so? tekin? castle? Neu? HK motors? thanks in advance. |
A couple things to think about:
1) You won't be able to update the firmware on the MM because as of 1.26 (I think), the MM won't arm on any more than 3s anymore. So, if you are happy with the current FW, I guess this is a non-issue. 2) That setup works well for most people, but it also depends on what you plan to do with it? Racing? Bashing? High-speed (>40mph) runs? If you are going to be running in rough conditions (high speed, grass, lots of heavy stop-n-go), I would go with 5s on the MMM/2200 combo. If you plan on ever running 6s, you might want to look at Castle's 1717 motor if you want overpowered (and assuming it will fit-might be a tight squeeze with limited gearing options). It's going for ~$70 right now at Castle's clearance sale. |
I consider the 4x4 sc trucks like an 1/8 buggy, so any buggy system should work well.
If you plan to run a MM on 4s lipo you will want a motor around 2000-2500kv. So we have a 60mm long motor, 4 pole preferably, 2000-2500kv. I am sure a neu 1512 will do, and the the cc 2650 motor should be fine. There are other options, medusa (if you can find one) tekin, and some of the clones (questionable). Novak are making some 4 pole motors, not sure if they are any good as they have not been tested/released yet. If you can scare up an aveox 36/30/1.5y it would be about perfect. I run one in my pede 4x4 on 4s and it does very well with a MM with a ccbec. |

The Mamba Max i have is about 2 years old. However i just updated the firmware about 2 weeks via my castle link. Did i just ruin my ability to run this with 4 cells? my plan is to take it to the track to run it, but i don't know about racing. it's not really gonna fit in any class since its a custom build. just gonna be a fun racer kinda thing. and i also plan to bash. I do NOT plan on any over gearing or high speed runs. i just want a nice smooth, and efficient drivetrain. Quote:
would it behoove me to just get a true 1/8th system? do you think that would be less trouble in the long run? |

I would say the MMM/2650 combo would be the best option for 4s. I do not really think you need to go up to 6s, but if so you will want a 1600kv motor or so. That brings you back to a 1518 cc motor, or their 1800kv 1512. Or a neu, or used medusa aveox, etc. |
