Need help with E-Maxx + Ofna 1/8 shocks
 

Hey guys I've been having a lot of trouble trying to locate stiffer springs for these shocks other than what Ofna has.

These are Ofna Ultra LX Buggy rear 13mm shocks... the springs are 20.5mm (.75") outside diameter and 88mm (3.5") long. I have the stiffest Ofna offers and they just arent stiff enough for my heavy E-Maxx.

Perhaps I should just get 4 more of these shocks and call it a day? They are pretty cheap so it's not a huge deal... just trying to learn as I go.

Any suspension guru's that can help me out? I have modified the piston holes to be a bit larger which helped a lot. I'm running 70wt but might try thicker if I can find some springs to help out. My main issue is not getting enough rebound/stiffness out of the suspension.

I had the same issue with my MBX6 shocks on my E-maxx. I ended up buying 4 more, and it work very well now.

That's probably going to be the easiest thing to do.

Hmmm... What exactly are you doing with the truck? jumping, racing or just bashing? It seems you have a little contradiction with your setup there...

Springs are use to maintain the ride height you set using the pre-load collars on the shock body... They don't 'control' the rebound... if you opened
the hole in the piston, this will only mean it now passes through the oil faster though you are using a relatively high weight (max for those shocks i think)....

Rebound is really determined by the oil viscosity, the condition of the diaphragm, pistol hole/s size and how the shock was filled with oil...

Remove the shocks and check the diaphragms... If they have cracks or holes, replace them with fresh ones... Also check the condition of the o-rings at the
bottom of the shock... install the stock piston... fill the shock with piston at the bottom stroke (slowly!!)... make sure all the bubbles are removed (this may take
some time with a thick oil)... carefully insert the diaphragm at the top of the shock body... it will over flow... be careful not to reintroduce air into the system...
then screw on the top cap firmly... check the rebound by pushing the shock shaft all the way in and measure the distance it comes when you release it...
the other shafts should measure the same if done correctly...

Install the springs and set your ride again... not sure you will need all that pre-load when you reassemble... push down on the truck and see how it responds...

These shocks are brand new. This is a jumping/bashing machine and I should have just stuck with an 8 shock setup instead of thinking I could cut it down to 4 lol.

If nothing else I've learned a little about shocks... and I've upgraded to much stronger shocks. I've been running Ofna shocks on my Rustler for a while and haven't had any problems.

Appreciate the help! I just get super excited anytime I work on these things lol

How much does your truck weigh? I have a really chunky machine and four shocks support it quite well...

I'm running 60wt with my build all around...

I'm not really sure... I will have to weigh it tonight. It's pretty heavy with batteries installed but no more than any other normal e-maxx I would imagine.

BTW I re-read your previous post and realized I'm doing my oil fills a bit wrong. I normally leave the diaphram in the cap of the shock then screw it in... it possible this is allowing air to remain inside the shock.

I'm not 100% sure this is my problem but it's something to note for the future.

Yep, that might allow a little air to enter the system while you screw the cap on... you can check it before opening it... just push and pull on the shaft and
listen for air bubbles when the pass the piston...

Almost done.. here is the front... I had a spare set of slightly shorter Ofna shocks (have 2 sets ordered to match what i have) so I went ahead and installed them for now.

I need to do more testing with different springs and oil weights but right now I'm running stiff springs on the outside set and soft-med on the inside. 40wt on the outside shocks and 30wt on the insides.

I can drop the truck from 4-5ft and it takes it like a champ. :party:

I have 4 UE (which I believe are just OFNA) shocks, with black springs on the back and blue on the front. The truck weighs just under 5kg / 11lb and it seems fine to me.

I'm still working on this setup. I should have an update soon... had to order some long screws to hold both sets of shocks to the same hole on the FLM shock towers.
