Damaged 9xl?
While working on my table I dropped my 9xl,although it fell just about 3 inches it fell on the shaft and popped the endcap about 1/4 of an inch open.I pushed it back in place and put a motorclamp on it and it SEEMS to run just fine.Is this a big deal? Should I send it in to be checked? Am I worrying about nothing? Thanks

It's normal that the end pop's off, so unless it damaged the winding's inside the motor it's fine.
Keep an eye out for any sudden bursts in temp's, cause if it run's warmer than normal there might be something binding inside the motor causing friction. |
I wouldn;t worry about it. I have did this to a new motor myself. Just make sure to run it with the clamp cause it will come off easier next time.

I did this to my 8L before I'd even run it, I just epoxied the end back on and it ran fine. Always ran hot, but I think this was just because its a very revvy motor for an emaxx. For my 9XL I have an RC-Monster clamp, looks like it should do the job nicely.

That is not a really smart thing to do. If you blow a bearing your going to have a hard time getting the motor appart...

I fail to see how its not a good solution. It ran without a problem for a few months, and last week I wanted to clean/oil the bearings so I tapped the shaft firmly against a worktop and then endbell came back off. Easy to get apart, but very unlikely to fall apart during use.

While running at you crash good you will have to do it again. I have did this before. A motor clamp is much better for secure reason.

That "tap on the shaft" can blow the bearing, making it even more difficult to open the motor.
But be my guest, i'm only giving some free advice. If you say it work's, no problem. But don't be surprised when you tap the shaft and the whole bearing explode's. |
I have no doubt the clamp is a better solution, which is why I have one on my 9XL, but for those who don't want to sink $20 into it, epoxy does work well. It never came apart in an accident, and I had some very bad crashes, espically when I had it in the back of my custom truck, which had the motor past the rear axle.
I figured it puts quite a bit of stress on the bearing when taking the motor apart, but it spins fine, the trick is several lighter taps than one big one. Replacement bearings are dirt cheap anyway. I know a clamp is better, but its not the only solution, and its caused me no problems so far, which is why i mentioned it. |
It's not that the bearing's are cheap. I just blew my 9l bearing(although feigao) and need to get that tiny metal outer ring out. Good luck to me, cause it won't go out smooth.
Next point is how would you take a backplate off if the motor shaft can bounce between the bearing's with nothing that's holding it? The only way left is the front plate, but I can tell you, it's 100 time's tighter than the rear one. Or tap it futher out the back so it's hitting with the magnet, but you may risk damaging that doing so. Be wise and spend the 25 dollar's a rcm heatsink / clamp cost. It will save you allot of trouble. |
Tapping is bad - pressing out is good.
To avoid rear/front end cap from shooting out you need to shim rotor inside motor can. Artur |
Well I managed to dislodge the front cap and knock the rear cap totally off and 20ft away from truck along with other parts. The motor never ran right after that day. I would have saved the motor if I had run the clamp. That is why I suggest it.
