MMMXL+1717 in 1/8 Truggy

Would a Monster Mamba Max XL and 1717 be a good combo in a 1/8th scale Truggy.BTW will the MMMXL run 5s?

DrKnow65 04.24.2011 09:33 AM

Yes it will, I've ran my XL on 4S (had to race before my 2nd 4S pack was done charging)...
And I've ran my 1717 in both my Hyper 7 and my Losi 8ight T without issue on 6S.

The 1717 I think is a bit overkill on torque, even by my standards, for a vehicle under 10Lbs. It's limited to 45Krpm where a Neu 1521-1527 can put out the same watts and spin an extra 15Krpm faster... just my $.02

Did do a great job of pulling the kids on their skateboard with the 1717 in the 8T though :-)

Thanks DRknow.

1527 can burst up to 4500-5000watts and is rated at 60k.

Ola 04.24.2011 01:03 PM

But wouldnt a 60k rpm setup run alot hotter, than a 45k rpm?

DrKnow65 04.24.2011 01:26 PM

RPM doesn't effect temps as much as load.
I.e. a motor pushing 1000watts at 60k will run cooler than a motor pushing 1500watts at 30k.
The more RPM you spin the less gear you have to run to get the same top speed, so less load.
I think the Neu's perform very well with a top RPM of 45-50k.
If you spin the motor to a max of 30k you end up gearing so high that there is an excessive load...

Once Castle gets out the rebuild kits for the 1717 (also waiting for 1518 and 1520) I am going to run that sucker on 8S. What in I don't know yet but I am doing it.

Don't think that's going to happen.

Weren't 1518, 1520 and 1717 discontinued by Castle?

Yup, 1512 also.

This guy runs his Revo with 1717 and 8s though; http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29215

only the 1800kv 1512 motor was discontinued and since it shares rotor with the 2650kv version you have repair kit for it ..

If im not mistaken castle is planing to reintroduce those motors and their repair kits.

JERRY2KONE 05.10.2011 04:26 AM

Correct

You are correct. Patrick from CC chimed in a few weeks back on another thread stating something to that effect. IIRC he said that they were working on releasing repair kits for the 1717 and a few others, and that they were also going to re-introduce a few of these motors because of the huge response to the sale. The 1717 was one of the motors mentioned. I do not remember which thread it was in, but it is here on RCM somewhere.

Bmr4life 05.10.2011 06:29 AM

Wow, well that's good news. Now I don't have to fear killing any of the motors I bought.

Depends on the weight, really. I run a MMM and a 1717 on 6s in my Muggy which weighs in around 15 pounds when fully loaded and I can dance that thing around like my Mini Revo VXL. The Mamba XL is still in it's infancy and hasn't had the bugs worked out as well as the MMM, costs more, weighs more, takes more space, and is pretty much unneeded in 1/8th scale unless you're building a total tank of a truggy. Big Savage conversions running huge tires could benefit from it but for a Truggy I'd stick to the tried-and-true MMM.

The 1717 is a monster of a motor, I really hope Castle gets around to building them again. It'll push my 15 pound Muggy past 60 MPH before the thing blows over and flops it around like a rag doll, absolutely insane power. My brother put one in his Summitt and gets about 2-3 runs to a single charge because it keeps tearing up drivelines and differentials, all on 4s. If you have the motor already it's a beast and won't let you down but the power is tough to reign in.

EDIT: BTW the 1717 does not get hot, not unless you get really crazy with it. My brother's Summitt comes back mildly warm at most, and the hottest I've seen mine get so far was 115...
