Hyper 8, 2 speed?
 

Hey, would it be possible to put an inferno gt 2 speed in a hobao hyper 8? cause l really want to put a 2 speed, and l know that kyosho's parts are very similar to ofna, hobao. Whats the difference between a 2 speed gears, and 2 speed clutch bell? which one is better?

Why would you want a 2 speed in your hyper 8? That would just make for more moving parts that can break, especially when it shifts into 2nd gear. With brushless power, 2 speed transmissions are useless and become annoying very fast.

I ran a two-speed setup in my Ofna Ultra GTP (basically an on-road buggy) and it was difficult to control when it shifted. The torque difference between the two speeds would literally cause all the tires to start spinning - and at 40mph+ that can be bad.

Like I said, the problem is the difference in torque. When you are at the upper end of first gear, the motor revs are high. When it shifts into second gear, the motor doesn't drop rpms as fast as a nitro engine does under the new load so it just breaks all the tires loose and you spin out.

To minimize this effect, you'd have to make it so the change in ratio is not dramatic, but if you do that, you aren't really gaining much.

Too bad there wasn't a type of durable CVT which has no shift points, just a constantly adjusting ratio in analog fashion.

But really, if you are shooting for really high speeds, the easiest and best thing to do would be to use a single speed and a larger motor to handle initial starts better and handle the power requirements of the tall gearing.

The Kyosho 2-speed setup is longer than the normal center diff setup. You would have to drill out another pair of holes in the chassis to mount and find an appropriate (shorter) sized dogbone or CVD. You would also have to give up reverse and switch to a mechanical brake setup (unless you already have mech. brakes)

2 different things. The 2-speed trans goes in place of a center diff. The 2-speed clutchbell goes in place of a standard clutchbell, or in our case for electric a Mod 1 pinion.

RC-Monster has a 2-speed pinion adapter that you would use with a 2-speed. You get the adapter and then choose the 2 gears to put on it.

the brushless motor really doesn't play nice with a shifting transmission. Even with a small 700W motor in my Revo conversion, the front end always pops up when it shifts into second. I wouldn't recommend it either. Plus, you need to compromise with the shift point, because obviously you lose RPM as the battery discharges.

I have a Hyper 1/7 Evolution. Hobao's answer to the Inferno GT, maybe it even predates the Inferno GT I am not sure. It originally came with a 2 speed + Reverse transmission. I broke 3 of these the same way in the pics below. The normal 2spd without reverse seemed to have held up, but it no longer has the monster 528xr I switched it to a less powerful OS engine.

What i can tell you though is that it comes with a 2spd transmission and its is not available in the US. I was able to order it from RCMart.com when I got the part# but I don't know if its available anymore. The Part# is 19537, and according to my Hyper 1/7 manual its $152. Would I run the 2spd with a nitro car? Absolutely because of the narrow power band of a 2 stroke engine. With a brushless car? Forget it. They are far more fragile than a spool or center differential would be. I have pics of carnage where my big displacement nitro motors would sheer through the metal on the 1-2 upshift at WOT.

Check out these pics. This is what a Novarossi 528XR did on a 1-2 upshift at full throttle. The cam that catches the internal pin for 2nd gear sheered straight through the metal. It was failure that took place over 2 or 3 upshifts within 5 minutes of fitting the 528XR to the car.

A brushless would exhibit just as much if not more torque on the upshifts. If you are brushless forget the option of a 2spd. Its been tried and many have failed. You can't go wrong with a center spool, or center differential.

I later replaced it with a normal 2spd w/o reverse and that has held up much better but I've always been careful to let off the trigger during the upshift to reduce torque.
