Robinson Racing Slipper/Spur for Flux

Just got my new edition of Xtreme RC mag and I found a picture of this and had to do some digging around to find it on RR's website but here is an upgraded, tougher version of the slipper unit for us Savage Flux users. Looks interesting and promising.

for sure it looks better than what HPI calls its slipper clutch, but it also looks expensive.....

I've switched over to a plastic spur and actually like it quite well.

plastic spur and locked slipper FTW! I have yet to ruin a plastic spur, I bought 2 spares because I thought they were going to strip pretty fast, but they are still NIP just collecting dust. That RR thing is WAY too expensive, looks heavy, and im sure it still ruins pinions and is just as loud as the stock unit.

^ ditto, I have 2 spares....but I don't think I'll need em. Still does standing backflips with the plastic spur just fine.

I really dont know why HPI used a steel spur on the flux. I wish i would have thought about using a plastic spur earlier, like before i went theough the the 3 RCM pinions.

yep plastic or delrin spur lock slipper from new and go for it
end of problem and so easy and cheap to replace

I guess it is a typo, but RR list that a a 32p 44t spur, and not mod 1... Seems too expensive as well. I run steel on steel on my lst, and if you set the mesh correctly you do not get noise.

Noise = friction and friction = wear. I have a feeling alot of people are setting their flux mesh with a piece of paper, and not by the sound it makes... And wearing out pinions. I have temped my pinions/spurs and you can get a good feel for how they are doing that way too.

I just set mine by feel. I adjust for a little rocking motion in the spur. Whenever i need to remove the motor I always remove the the middle gear from the tranny and screw the top back on so i can make sure the mesh is smooth and frictionless. After all that I was still killing the pinions.

Edit. I guess that would make more sense if i said i also loosen the pinion grub so it free spins

I'm pretty sure on my mesh as well. I tried the paper method once on my slash 2 years ago when I first got it, figured it was crap and have since done it by feel. Just a little wiggle (all the way around the spur) is all you need. I've also temped the pinion, never any higher than motor temps.
Plastic spur is showing no signs of wear yet, and I figure if my mesh was bad it would go quicker than a hardened steel pinion. I will say that the savage flux is tougher to set the mesh than anything else I've set meshes on.

hey, anyone have the part number for the plastic spur? For some reason I can't find it on the HPI site....................

brainanator 08.14.2011 07:16 PM

here ya go

http://www.hpieurope.com/piw.php?lang=en&partNo=76937

ya need a small bushing or bearing to go in there. The wheel bearings from my crt.5 fit, I've also heard that clutchbell bearings are the right size.

It is also a little bigger, so I went up 1 tooth on my pinion to compensate. I still net a little down gearing, but that's fine by me.

edit: dunno why I was on hpieurope site...thought it looked funny.
