MBX6T to brushless
Well, this isn't something new. It's been done a thousand times before but I thought I'd share it anyway.
I've been running an E-Revo for quite some time and felt it was time to try something new especially since I built a second E-Revo from spare parts and a few additional parts from E-Bay chop shops. Sold it as a roller and bought the 6T as a roller without electronics. It was in pretty good shape since it only had 2 hours of runtime on it. Got a banged up body and the original body (unpainted) and a set of Losi Truggy wheels in ok shape with the roller. Since I'm a big fan of the electric powered RC's a BL system is a necessity so my E-Revo has willingly donated it's powerplant which is a MMM with a CC1518 1800kv motor. On to the build! I'm using the MBX6ECO battery/ESC mount and servo/reciever mount and a RC-Monster motor mount. I also bought the motor mount used and it's probably an early revision. Does it's job brilliantly though :) The car out of the box: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-M...0/DSC_0533.JPG After a bit of wrenching: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-D...0/DSC_0534.JPG And then some more wrenching: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...0/DSC_0535.JPG The RC-Monster motor mount: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p...0/DSC_0536.JPG Pretty clean: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...0/DSC_0538.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5...0/DSC_0539.JPG Next step is to mount the ECO parts. |
Created templates for the mounts:

I use a 1,5mm drill initially and then move on to a 3mm drill. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-M...0/IMAG0057.jpg Slightly larger holes now, 3mm: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-u...0/IMAG0058.jpg Countersunk the holes: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-j...0/IMAG0059.jpg Scary moment, did my holes match the mont? It did!: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...0/IMAG0060.jpg Drilling the holes for the servo mount: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...0/IMAG0061.jpg |
And again, countersunk the holes:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...0/IMAG0062.jpg Another scary moment. Does it fit. It does!: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...0/IMAG0063.jpg Chassis layout without electronics: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...0/IMAG0064.jpg I've covered the nitro layout holes with duct tape and filled the holes with some chemical metal. I wasn't too careful and the weather made it cure in a flash so it came out a bit messy. I'll leave it as it is for now since I'm a bit uncertain if the chemical metal will stick to the chassis when put under stress. Time will tell! The hole for the flywheel is still there. I will probably mount a plate on the inside of the chassis and fill it with chemical metal if my other fillings will hold. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...0/IMAG0065.jpg A bit of electronics has found their way into the chassis. Still need to clean this mess up. I've got a cable tie mounted in a bad place and simply forgot to remove it. Placed it there to keep the wires in place will I was mounting the servo. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...0/IMAG0066.jpg I've made some mistakes a long the way. There's a chance the batteries can touch the spur in a bad crash but I placed some spacers, facing the batteries, on the motor mount to prevent this from happening. My countersink was a bit too large so it didn't turn out as good as I would've liked. |
looking good! :D

Thanks :)
Got it all together late last night, after getting the kids into bed, and took it out for a quick spin on the street. Straight like a arrow even in high speeds. :) Also ordered two plastic spurs from the ECO version since the metal one is making some high pitched noise that I don't want to listen to. I will try to get some descent shots of the car put together and post them later today. |
Small update. Took out the center diff and thought I'd put in some heavier fluid. Wasn't much in i to begin with so I cleaned everything. Put in some new thicker oil and put everything back together. Turned the outputs to make sure everything was in place. As I'm wrenching away on the four bolts holding the spur I hear something snap.
Okies.. opened the diff and I've managed to break one of the diff cross shafts.. oh well.. guess the E-Revo will be my choice this weekend. |
looks good..I love my 5t conversion. My favorite truck in the fleet by far

Made a better mount for the ESC. I previously held it down with zip ties:

A new body is on my wish list: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x...0/DSC_0637.JPG |
I recently purchased a few cans of paint from Montana Cans. This isn't lexan paint but those painting graffiti are probably familiar with the Montana Cans brand. I did talk to the Swedish rep before buying and they recommended the Gold series as this is made for flexible materials and it shouldn't have any issues sticking to lexan. Time will tell how well it holds up. I test painted a small piece and bend it over and over without the paint cracking. The reason I picked the Montana paint is because it's dirt cheap compared to lexan paint. I got six 13.5 fl oz cans of paint for $65 inc shipping.
This is my first paint job ever and the body initially had a two tone with silver at the bottom. Turned out that I could peal it off even though I painted with very thin layers. The black stuck to the body though. I had to remove the silver but of course I didn't get it all off so there are tiny tiny silver spots in the black but it looks ok. This is what it looks like right now. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...0/DSC_0686.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n...0/DSC_0693.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...0/DSC_0694.JPG |
Mini update: A few parts has found their way to my doorstep. Still waiting for my tires though.

Ok, time for an update. I finally got my new tires and mounted them on the Axial's. These are the Losi Super Bolt-Ons:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N...0/DSC_0722.JPG Paint. Well, it didn't hold for even one bash session. Either it was the paint itself or my prep work that just isn't cutting it. I'll repaint it again... : https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i...0/DSC_0724.JPG |
just back the black with white and I think it'd look pretty cool.
I had a paint job fail like that once, let it chip off all the loose stuff, then I just backed it with black again. Looked kinda cool with the random tears and stuff all over with black behind them. Looks like it's jumping out of it's paint! |
Slapped on a new coat of paint (white & red) as suggested by brainanator but no pics. Took the 6T with me and headed out to an abandoned FMX track:
In it's glory days: Last year, and pretty much what it looks like today: Plugged in my batts and that was the end of today's session. The MMM let out the magic smoke. One of the caps is busted. Still under warranty though so Castle will receive a package from me in a week or so. |
Time for an update!
Crashed and some parts went to the bin: diff housing, rear shock mount, wing and the alu brace on the front of the diff housing. :D New parts mounted: Wing Diff housing M2C rear brace kit Tekno battery tray as I donated the MBX-6 ECO battery tray to my MTA4 build. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-k...0/DSC_0919.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-W...0/DSC_0920.JPG |
