Yet Another Savage 5B build
Inspired by the Savage conversion topics by PieterVds and Knez I decided to also start building a 1:5 scale electric Baja 5B.
I still had a lot of Savage parts laying around (e.g. transmission, differentials) so all I needed was a chassis, some wheels, a motor and some smaller parts. On the internet I found to suppliers of this type of chassis: TCS and Alza Racing. After reading some reviews I decided to go for the Alza Racing chassis: http://www.alza-racing.com/alza/img/...5-thickbox.jpg Besides the 5B chassis I also ordered these Alza parts: - Lipo plate - Motor mount - Bulkhead brace conversion kit - Slipper locker The ESC will be a Xerun 150A: http://www.hobbywing.com/upload/car/xerun-150A.jpg For the engine I was looking for a Castle 1520 but I could not find one so I ordered this one from HobbyKing (I think it is a Leopard motor with a Turnigy print): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...082-1500KV.gif A few days after ordering the Turnigy motor I encountered a new Castle 1717 and I also bought that one. HPI 24MM Savage conversion kit (to mount Baja size wheels on the Savage axles): http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/pa...02530_002m.jpg At first I wanted to use the 8 shocks which are used on the nitro versions of the Savage but a few people recommended that I should try the Losi XXL shocks: http://i7.ebayimg.com/08/i/001/54/16/9487_3.JPG To fit these shocks I ordered the following conversion kit: http://www.innovative-rc.com/images/x-parts.jpg I ordered these wheels and tires: http://rc-car-online-shop.de/shop/pu...ad7d64039e.jpg http://rc-car-online-shop.de/shop/pu...ad7d66b277.jpg And last but not least a Baja 5B wing: http://i11.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/35/28/8776_12.JPG I hope to receive everything in the coming weeks so I can start building. Let me know if you have more questions or remarks. greetings, Douwe |
I received the Losi XXL LST shocks today, it really are some 'big boys', however the length is about 10mm shorter than the standard Flux Big Bores.
Here is a comparison between the Savage nitro shocks, the Losi XXL LST shocks and at the bottom the standard Flux Big Bores: http://www.achterkamp.net/images/mbf/flux5b6.jpg The shock shaft is pretty thick, around 4 mm: http://www.achterkamp.net/images/mbf/flux5b7.jpg |
I have to wait for the Losi XXL LST -> Savage conversion kit to arrive to be able to mount the XXL shocks to the Savage shock towers but I wanted to see how big the car will be. Therefore I quickly installed the Flux Big Bores to shoot some pictures to show the difference in size between the Alza 5B chassis and the standard Flux chassis:

The Rustler is pretty much finished, I just have to do some more speed runs with it after replacing the motor and ESC (I fried the original ESC  ) [ontopic] |
The shock conversion kit is not in yet and the 1717 motor mount is also underway but I could not wait any longer. I installed the Tork 2200 motor with a 17/44 gearing and did some test runs with that configuration on 4S and 6S that went really well! I'm starting to think that the 1717 might be a bit too much power (if that is possible ).
