brushless motor optios for trx rustler

So I have a friend who purchased a xl5 rustler and promply destroyed his esc by getting it wet multiple times. So he was incouraged to buy a castle sv2 5000kv combo. He runs 5000mah 7 cell nihm at this time.

Against my advice he didn't regear it and demagged the motor. I verified this by using a different esc and it acts the same way. So my question is what would be a good kv replacement motor? I have a limit of $40 for a motor and have been looking at the tacon 5000kv motor, but that has been out of stock for months.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A vxl motor would fit the bill quite nicely- may not be the best motor in the world but the kv ( 3500kv ) is perfect for normal 2s lipo use, super-fast on 3s, so 7 nimh cells should be just fine, so long as he doesn't act like a noob again and actually re-gears it according to traxxas's instructions:

Chances are it'll run a fair bit cooler too compared to a little 5000kv thing the same size..

I might go with one of the Tacon 3650's with a lower kv (3500kv or 3930kv) - can't beat the price on those. Gear it like the vxl (3500kv) or a little lower (with the 3930kv) as Neil posted.

So another question! what is the difference between the 3650 onroad motors and the 3650 motors they say are for offroad on hobbypartz website?

I already planned on trying to get a lower kv but ive been hesitant to order one that says onroad. Thanks!

Some are labeled Leopard, some as Tacon - by all accounts, they seem to be the same motors. I would order by size and kv and not worry about them categorizing some as on-road and others off-road - it makes no difference. If I were buying a motor for a Rustler right now, I'd grab one of the Tacon 3650's they have on sale.

ok so i figured ill order up the 3200kv motor. So now i have ANOTHER question lol!

I'm working on on a brushless conversion for my Rc10 gt and have a shortcourse chassis and 1/8th scale buggy tires. I plan on running 2 and 3s and also the Tacon 3650 3200KV motor. How big of an esc should i be looking for? is a 35A going to be too small?

I wouldn't use a 35a esc for that set-up. I'd pick up a Castle Sidewinder new on eBay for $50 instead.

I know castle doesn't give out Amp ratings for their esc's but is there a round about guess on how much it is? My buddy has a spare that I'm gonna try to buy from him

brian015 12.12.2011 07:25 PM

I think I read 55A somewhere for the new Sidewinder, but I could be wrong.

suicideneil 12.12.2011 08:40 PM

Slightly higher than that I think even- Patrick did mention the reason for the MM being discontinued was because the new sidewinder is just as powerful almost, and the MMPro is somewhere between the SW and the MMM so the MM was redundant.

If not a SW, then something like a 65-80amp esc should do fine.
